Responses to another question about mental illness?!

Question: http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind...
Just wondering what people with mental illness(yes I'm a sufferer too) think of this question and the best answer given?
Do you feel as though there are some truly ignorant people around in the world who have absolutely no empathy?

EDIT: Shivers, I think you've read this by now, so I'm taking out the personal info as I don't want it on the boards forever and a day!

I didn't see the original question, and wish I had.

~ Edited here ~

It's really past time we as a community got over this whole mental illness stigma thing, began to realise that 'mental' is just another form of 'illness' and started doing some real work, medically, financially and practically to bring some relief to sufferers of these conditions.

How much does our community miss out on the talents, skills and energies of people because we don't accept them as they are, and value them for themselves?

Cheers :-)

that best answer burned me up a little too. but come on...look at the source. what can you expect? i know that i know a limited amount on the subject and my opinion is not important. so, i answered why i thought more women were seeking help.

i'm sorry about all the insensitivity.

yes, there's far too much ignorance, though there were better answers than I'd have expected and some down right stupid ones too. Though I do tend to feel very sorry for those ignorant ones, they seemed down right childish to say the least just another example they really haven't lived enough or are that down right stupid or they are that self absorbed.

Our society is rush, rush and focuses on perfectionism in our relationships at home and at work and we are expected to juggle everything. If a person knows they have a mental illness and they are getting treatment, they are more productive and a better person all around for seeking help. It takes a strong individual to admit when you need help and people with those attitudes as in that previous question steer people in the wrong direction and that makes difficult situations worse. They can not have empathy if they have not experienced a mental illness personally, but they honestly should have sympathy because anything could happen to them at any moment or at least a loved one and they probably do have a loved one with a mental illness but that individual can not and will not tell them with the attitudes they possess.

I saw this question too. I had the same reaction as you.

I just didn't have it in me that day to answer.

These people don't have a clue.

It wasn't said very nicely, but welcome to the Internet.

From personal experience I think anti-depressants are given out like candy. Go to my regular doctor for an ear infection and I get anti-biotics and Zoloft. He claimed my immune system is down because of my stress. At the time my stress was just basic life stuff and I was/am very happy. So I didn't take them and got a new doctor. Went to get a tetanus shot and got that and Zoloft. Same thing. That happened 4 times until I got the doctor I see now.

There are people who truly need it and I am glade it is there for those people in need. But I think doctors are pushing it on their patience and the advertisements make it worse. The advertisements make it seem like any average person needs them and that just isn't true.
