Research has centered around genetic factors, hence twin studies. Identifying specific genes that may cause this disorder is not an easy task and at this point only provides a 'heads up' that the disorder may occur. As with all genetic research the goal is to not only anticipate the disorder, but find a way to overcome the genes by altering them.

At this point medication that alters the release of chemicals neurologically enable one to manage the disorder if they so desire. Naturally since the disorder typically does not appear until age 21, the individual may not perceive theirselves to have a problem and will not take the medication willingly.
