Do you know that mental illness will effect 1 in 4 of us sometime during our lif!

Question: It happened to me after an operation on my spine went wrong. And whilst I was not classed as mentally ill my depression was classified under the mental health act as a mental illness.

My depression was brought on by trauma and perhaps this is case for millions of people who are now classed as having a mental illness. Is this a fair diagnoses do you think?

I'm thinking how quickly we judge people who have mental health issues like John Logan who jumped over a balcony with his two children resulting in the death of his son and with his daughter sustaning treadful injuries.

Perhaps the classification of what is a mental illness needs to be revised as my ....in Brackets (mental illness) was not a threat to other people as obviously was John Hogan's condition..... which was a tragety waiting to happen

Yes the 1 in 4 statistic is indeed very true sadly. The fact that there is still such a stigma attached to it that makes that statistic even worse. Many people do not realise that it will affect them directly or indirectly at some point and then when it does happen they suddenly feel out of their depth or they are shocked what mental illness has the capability to do to people. The quicker people realise that mental illness is not shameful and is what it says it is- an illness- the quicker we'll lose the stigma and more people will reach out for help.
Because many many cases of mental illness can be helped. It might take time and some experimentation with different options but it can be done.
It will take a lot of time before mental illness is more widely accepted but with the increasing numbers of people it is affecting, no-one can avoid it.
Going through it definitely makes you a different person, in a good way, it makes you think about things more carefully, think about people's situations more carefully (like John Logan) so it can have a positive side to it to.

I am worried that as you have been diagnosed with depression you are ashamed that this is classed as a mental illness which I know has a stigma attached.

I think it is a terrible shame that mental illnesses are not recognised as actual illnesses which affect peoples lives. It's ok to have a mental illness, if you have been diagnosed then you can be treated. But it is not ok that there is this stigma, it upsets me quite a lot as I know somebody with a psychotic depressive illness (manic depression) which has ruined her life. When you do not have an obvious physical disability people are not willing to accept that there is a problem.

Things are getting better though which is good, but I think that the public need to be made much more aware of mental health issues so that we can support people who just need our understanding.

Not me - I'm perfeclty sane.

My other personality is a bit of a nutter, though...

"Mental Health" is a very broad and all encompassing term, I think most people realize this. Let's face it, depression is a mental illness, and so is psychosis, it's a matter of degree.
Someone with mild heart murmur is considered to have heart disease, the same as someone with a major heart attack. It's just a labelling system, the more negativity you attach to a term, the more valid you make that negative impression. It is what it is, treat it that way.

I'm very aware of that fact. The depth and type of mental illnesses are not known to the general public and should be explained and redefined in my opinion.

I heard the quote today , but it was that 1 in 4 families are affected by mental illness , not individuals
You are right of course that any mental illness should attract the same level of sympathy as a physical illness .
I suppose what you are saying is that there are levels of mental illness just as there are physical and I also agree with that . Many people including yourself hit a temporary blip in their lives and recover completely with support and the correct treatment , whilst at the other end of the scale some unfortunate individuals will never be fully recovered.
As for the case you quote this is a tragedy which is all too common nowadays with parents splitting and rowing over custody of children . These folk should put themselves last and the children first when they squabble. . Apparently both this guys brothers committed suicide just after their father died , the whole story is just awful/

1 in 1 is more likely

Mental illness has traditionally been surrounded by community misunderstanding, fear, and stigma. Stigma towards people with a mental illness has a detrimental effect on their ability to obtain services, their recovery, the type of treatment and support they receive, and their acceptance in the community. I have manic depression and have come to realize it is not much unlike diabetes, however if you are a diabetic and taking insulin there is no ridicule! The brain and it's chemistry are a part of the body, mental health is not seperate from physical health; but again this is a result of ignorance, a lack of knowledge in the public that people attach the stigma to it! There is still a huge deficit in public knowledge about brain chemistry and what knowledge is out there is slow to be absorbed. Humans have created an 'artificial' 9-5 world with laws and reasoning that is contrary to nature in many ways.
