How come when someone has amnesia...?!

Question: Does not remember who he or she is but still remembers the names of governors and does not forget the language he or she used to speak?
I mean, language is not innate anyway!

That is the usual picture we see in theater, a person that does not recall who he or she is. But that is not always the picture. You see there are 2 types of memories. One is past memories which includes our name, birthdays etc. The other one are recent memories. These are things that we learned like names of places, language etc. Any of these memories or even both of them can be lost whenever an injury to the brain affects the centers that store them.

Have you seen the bourne movies? Granted that they are movies... that aside, its their life. He doesn't remember much, about his life, but he remembers and recognizes so many things because he was training to. Spending millions of dollars to train him to be like that.

You don't go around everyday thinking about your name. Or everyday thinking about other people exactly. Sometimes a loved one will look familiar. (though the governor part is kinda weird unless he had some significants of it in his life ect.) but the language works in the same way. You learn how to speak and you use it everyday. Its just what is natural to that person.

someone mentioned 2 types of amnesia so thats helpful and true. also perhaps it depends on where the trauma to the head occured. it would explain why someone still has those motor skills or language skills yet no recollection of who they are.
