Debate competitions are inherently flawed because there quite often is a correct answer. Statements of fact like does or does whatever shouldn't be questions in a debate at all. It's not fair.

Here's the DSM IV which is the official diagnostic manual for psychology: http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disord...

Understand that while substance abuse does qualify as a mental illness, it is categorically different from other mental illnesses. Having a substance use induced psychotic disorder is not the same as having a psychotic disorder. They have completely different diagnostic code numbers.

There is also a category of mental illnesses induced by general medical problems. Again, having Catatonic Disorder Due to a General Medical Condition is not the same as having a Catatonic Disorder.

Substance-induced disorders are in essence just another medically caused mental illness. In one way you can claim that it does cause a mental illness as it does qualify as a mental illness but on the other hand it's only a mental illness because it has mental illness-like symptoms and is really just neurological damage.

Basically, you have neurological damage that shares symptoms with a normal mental illness and not a mental illness per se.

One thing to understand though is that one illegal drug is usually completely and utterly different from another. Lumping them all together you can say just about anything about them since it's probably true for some form of illegal drug even if none of the others.

You must not be looking hard enough.

Honey, illegal drug use DOES cause mental illness....search google and look at Ecstasy effects on the brain...it looks like Swiss cheese

if you call loss of short term memory a mental illness, then i think your argument is false... sorry couldnt find articles

They don't cause mental illness, but they contribute to it...it all depends on the person's well being, and genetics.

You can't find anything reputable for your debate because you are wrong.
