Depression: different kinds of music?!

Question: I have noticed that alot of questions have been answered that say to surround yourself with happy music or good uplifting stories. For me listening to music that is generally happy and uplifting makes me feel out of place and somewhat fake. When I listen to bands like twiztid and three days grace I can relate to the lyrics and it makes me feel less alone in the way I can feel sometimes.

I can see how if someone wanted to change the way they think and not focus on the bad things as much, that listening to things like that could be a bad influence while making them feel better at that time. Good for short term but bad for long term.

I guess what I am asking is that does surrounding yourself with music and things that relate to how you feel usually make it worse in the long run or does that depend on the person?

This is a very good question. I think you make 2 good points. First, if you are feeling depressed or angry, then listening to that kind of music may relax you because you can identify with it and are not facing those feelings alone. its an emotional outlet. It works the same way as if you wrote about the feelings in a journal, or in extreme cases.... cut yourself. Second, the reason that listening to uplifting music may make you feel artificially happy is because you are not truly happy. It can be compared to drugs, that make you feel amazing for a few minuets and then after that you feel worse than before and you are still depressed. What research suggests, is that listening to upbeat music may be a temporary fix to help you get through a short period of time where you need to feel better. Music is very influential, but its not a cure. talking about the anger, sadness, and frustration in life is a good start to actually gaining real happiness and less depression.

Hope i answered what you were asking. Dr. Max S.

music doesnt have this big effect on your personality, its just a sideshow that you waste your time with.

The human body has a highly intelligent form of the radio aura of life. The many colors in the aura are the same as the notes in the chords of music . The frequencies in good music can tune into the aura chords and guide them from one arrangement to another. Try PBS classical music without words. Words use a different part of the brain and that makes it complicated.
