How do I stop feeling anxious over something that happened?!

Question: I got in trouble with the police and it was very trumatising the whole thing. It's done now but I have flashbacks and keep thinking its gonna happen again and linking anything to me..like if I see a police car and stuff. Even the sounds of a car outside my house makes me panic.

I can really identify; I just went through this. Try breathing deeply when you begin to feel anxious then talk to yourself. Say things to yourself like, "I'm just feeling anxious, but I'm ok now. I'm safe now. That's all over. That's not going to happen again." I was having flashbacks and I realized they were so upsetting because they caught me off guard. I forced myself to think about all the details of the encounter until they no longer made me feel so awful and I could just think of them and tell myself, "That's how I felt then but I'm ok now". I was forced to come to terms with all this after the police pulled me over (a year after the traumatizing time) and I shook dramatically and lost my breath during the encounter. I looked guilty of something, and I knew I had to get ahold of myself. If months pass and you feel worse istead of better, ask a professional for help. Post traumatic Stress Syndrome was my problem and it sounds silly and dramatic, but it's real and I couldn't get over it without a little help. I hope for the best for you.

I know how you feel.
If its really stressing you out i'd go to the doctor and ask for some valium. If you dont want to do that, just take some deep breaths (in through the nose - very important) and try and meditate or something. I've got anxiety too and that's what my therapist said to do. Also, eating fresh ginger is meant to help anxiety. doesn't taste very nice though.... but you only need a little bit.
