xanax usually only works for a few hours. it will help with the panic attacks but you may need a higher dose of milligrams than what you're taking. i don't know how much you're taking. maybe you should take the whole pill. xanax doesn't stay in your system for long. you have to take it 2 or 3 times a day. the drugs that really stablize your chemical balance in your brain are drugs like paxil, lexapro, zoloft or effexor. those you take once a day everyday and after 4-6 weeks you should start to feel better with anxiety and depression. xanax doesn't do anything for depression.

It increases "feel good" and calming chemicals in your brain. Becareful though because they are addictive.

xanax comes from group of medications that carry high risk of dependency (i.e. on the long term you become addicted to it). It's good for panic attacks WHEN the attack is taking place, it is suppose to make you feel calmer.

However, you need to see a therapist to work on the negative self thoughts that you get whenever you have one of those attacks, on the long run it would be like a tool you use to stop the thoughts from acting on your body to give you the panic symptoms.

Xanax doesn't treat manic depression, mood stabliazers do (like lithium, depakote, tegretol).
