Did your doctor explain why he added fluoxetine (Prozac) to your medication regimen? 20mg is the usual starting dose, so it is very low. What is your diagnosis? From the list of medications you are taking, it looks like you may be suffering clinical depression and anxiety. Another possibility is OCD or generalized anxiety disorder.

Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic usually used for schizophrenia but it also has many off label uses as well, one being for anxiety. Do you take this at bedtime?

Lorazepam, otherwise known as Ativan, is a benzodiazepine used as an antianxiety agent.

Prozac, like Lexapro, is an SSRI that inhibits the reuptake of serotonin in your brain which helps many people recover from their depression. Other uses for Prozac include OCD and panic attacks.

My advice is to talk to your doctor and ask him or her why Prozac was added to your regimen. Sometimes taking a combination of SSRI's can have a synergistic effect and help you feel much better. Examples include Lexapro and Wellbutrin or Effexor XR and Wellbutrin. I have used this combination on many patients with depression and anxiety and it has worked well for many of them because each medication blocks different neurotransitters. Wellbutrin works on blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine while Effexor XR works on blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. I'm not sure why your doctor chose two SSRI's that both block the reuptake of the same neurotransmitter - serotonin. Please make an appointment and ask. That' the best way to find out.

As for the other meds, there are lots of people who take 2 antidepressants, a mood stabilizer, an antianxiety medication like lorazepam, and a nonaddictive sleeping aid like Seroquel. However, I think you owe it to yourself to know the reason behind the addition of Prozac. Make sure your doctor is treating your disease, not simply covering up its symptoms. Be wary of doctors who prescribe a laundry list of medications. I'm not saying that this doctor is not trustworthy, but if he or she was well trained, the reason for the new prescription should have been explained to you thoroughly. If your symptoms don't improve in the next 2 months, I would suggest getting a second opinion. Good luck!

Fluoxetine is the generic form of Prozac. Lexapro is also an SSRI, and I am not sure why both would be prescribed at the same time. Are you transitioning from one drug to another? Make sure that one doctor is coordinating all of your medications.

EDIT:
Re: a post below. Prozac is not illegal, at least in the USA. It is a very common prescription.

?

That is a long med list. Always make sure your doctors know every med that you are taking. If he/she felt that another anti-depressent would be beneficial, then it may help you. That is a small dose of Prozac, so they started you small to likely see if there's any benefit. Its always best to contact your physician with any questions or concerns.

And Prozac is not illegal or a stimulant. It is an SSRI, a type of anti-depressent. It has gone generic, meaning the price is quite a bit cheaper. It is used mainly for depression and other certain personality disorders along with other medications in its class. You are also on Lexapro, an SSRI, which can be used for depression.

There have been studies showing that SSRI's may lead to an increase in suicidality. This is thought to be due to an increase in energy but still having suicidal thoughts. As long as you continue to be closely followed, it is not in itself a dangerous drug.

If you have any suicidal thoughts you need to contact your physician, go to the hospital, or call 911.

im taking that at the moment. I dont know much about it but i hope it does what it says on the box. We will get through this

ive been on fluoxetine 20mg and changed to citaloram as i found it didnt work correctly for me, i started getting mood swings with it and they started to wonder if i was bi-polar. however with the new meds this has stopped.
fluoxetine is one of the most common anti depressants used but it also has some side effects which are common and not very nice, such as headaches etc.
if you are worried about it speak to your dr about a possible change in meds. it will take about 6 weeks for the fluoxetine to start working. i found that i just woke up one morning and felt "fine" which wfelt really odd to me as i was expecting a gradual build up to feeling ok not it being ike someone had flicked a switch!
