How does a person develop 'tougher skin' and to be less sensitive>?!

Question: To not take things personally?

Answers: To not take things personally?

I'm trying to figure this out myself.

Tough skinned people seem up themselves. They don't care about other people's opinions, feelings, emotions, points of view. They just care about themselves. They laugh at other people's pain, say what they like, do what they like despite how it makes others feel. Maybe this is what we have to do but I ask myself, do I want to do this and compromise my beliefs in the way I should behave. I just don't know.

I used to be just like you until i discovered that while sometimes you should take on constructive critisim from the people that are close to you (such as friends and family), you should also remember that its YOUR opinion of yourself that matters the most.

Quit being a wuss!! Just kidding. I would say the best way is to realise that you really don't care what others think about you. The only thing that matters is what you think about you. Think better of your self (without being egocentric) and others will follow! :-)

I think a lot of us are like that. I struggle with situations where I don't feel a sense of approval. I'm now 33 and it gets a lot better. So time will help.

Otherwise, I think that if you have good "self-talk" about situations and realize that you are probably misjudging things when you are being sensitive, you will feel better.

I have found this book helpful: Mind Over Mood by Greenberger & Palesky. Helps you to figure out what happened, why it's affecting you so much, and how to rethink the situation so you feel better.

I always got called "too sensitive" as a kid. It's a little obnoxious because my sensitivity allows me to perceive things that others can't. I wouldn't want to be less sensitive now (most of the time, LOL). There's nothing wrong with you, you just have to learn the best way to take care of yourself!

The only thought I can suggest is to focus more on the Savior. He is our security, and He is our peace. It does hurt when people don't accept you, for the Almighty said it is not good for the man to be alone. We are meant to be social beings.

I think people like that have gone through an emotional trauma in their lives. It's something that happens to you that makes you less sensitive and tougher skined. It effects a persons personality. You can't change your personality just like that.
