The cause(s) of Schizophrenia are not known. There are many types of schizophrenia; it is not a single disease but a spectrum of disorders. The disease in general is misunderstood by the general public and there is much misinformation about it. For one thing it is generally associated with violent behavior whereas the incidence of violence among schizophrenics is no different than that of so-called "normal" people.

It is commonly assumed that hallucinations are the psychotic commonality of schizophrenia but the fact is some 40% of the human population has reported having had an hallucination at some time in their life whereas only some 2-3% are diagnosed as psychotivc. Not all psychotic hallucinations occur in those diagnosed as schizophrenia paranoia. Look up "hallucinations" in a Yahoo! web search also.
