i used to work late shifts 3 days on then 3 days off which was a total nightmare. i found the only way i could cope was to get home asap, not watch tv or use computer, in fact have no stimulation whatsoever. then get dressed for bed, get in it and lay there until you go to sleep. it took hours sometimes but i didn't give in, i told myself that i wasn't getting up so i'd have to go to sleep, which eventually i did. also go to bed and get up the same time whether you're working or not. this will be your 'normal' routine then. Do not use caffeine to keep you awake as you'll pay for it when you try to sleep!!
i got really unhappy doing these shifts so i eventually changed jobs, alot happier now!!
Remember, you work to live, not live to work!!

i rarely have a day off on my one night off a week i sleep through it, i hate working so much my gf will strangle me for it one day lol i have no choice however bills got to be paid 3k worth of debt too im only 19 too

i worked the "afternoon shift" too once (3:30-2) and i would have that problem sometimes too. i would lie in bed for hours cause i was too wired to sleep. i just kept the same or a similar sleeping pattern on my days off, if that's a possibility for you. i also tried to wake up and do things before work so i'd be more tired when i got home. if your job is not physical do some activity before you go. it will help you sleep. even if it's after you get home (though that's not ideal). hope this helps, not sleeping sucks!

i'd recommend that you talk to your doctor about this if it continues to get to you.

He may be able to prescribe you with an anxiolytic or even a hypnotic. Maybe even something like temazepam would kick you into sleep mode - and once you were asleep, you'd probably stay asleep.

your circadian rythms (biological clock) are screwed!
Good luck with it mate...

Ever think of just getting a 9-5 job? Don't mean to sound harsh, but we really can't do much here to help your situation....it is up to you to make a change. Can't live with these work hours? Then you have no choice but to find another job with different hours.

I wish I had more sympathy for you, but since I work from 11pm til 7am 5 sometimes 6 days a week, I think you have it easy. Look obviously you know by now that if you stay awake when you get home at this odd of an hour than you will get sleepy when you want to be awake. So instead of continuing to do something that doent work, then try something different. Right when you get home, take some melatonin. immediately go to a dark room and try to fall asleep. If you start to watch tv or get on the internet, then your brain is going to be too active to want to try and sleep. Sleep no more than 8 hours. Even if it means forcing yourself to get up and move around. You will wake up, it just may take a few minutes. The best way I find is to go stand outside if the sun is out. UV rays inhibit melatonin production so if you stand outside you will wake up. This is why it is extremely hard for me to sleep during the day in the summer months! By the time I get home I have already been exposed to some sunlight, so my brain thinks im supposed to be awake. I literally have to wear dark sunglasses, and make sure the window in my room is covered so the room is totally black. Any way enough about me. You need to try and force yourself to go to sleep. Its tempting to want to unwind with tv and other things when you get home, but Im teeling you, you are only sabotaging yourself!

See insomnia treatments, in section 3, at *ezy-build, below. Use one of the relaxation methods, in bed, after lights out, on pages 2, 11, 2.c, or 2.i, but they can take some time to learn, (progressive muscular relaxation excepted) so learn and become proficient in their use during the day; an alternative is to use the EFT, in section 53, and pages 2.q, and 2.o, saying to yourself: "Even though I currently have a sleep disorder, I deeply and completely accept myself." (or choose your own wording) while you use the acupressure tapping. Find out which works best for you, in the daylight hours, so you will be prepared, come bedtime. For many people, a good idea is to develop a set "wind down" routine for the last hour before bedtime, so your unconscious mind learns that it is time to put thinking aside, and prepare for mindfulness, (awareness, without cogitation/purposeful thought) or the EFT, in preparation for sleep, but the idea with mindfulness is to not even think about sleeping: just drift off, naturally, during exercising those techniques. * http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris
