Why exactly do we sometimes just stare at a random location for relaxation?!

Question: And it's like we're hypnotized and we can't leave from the stare because it's too comfortable. Why do we do this every now and then? What causes it? Etc

This is one way we find temporary relief from stress.
Blankly staring at something can give our brain a rest.
This must work for you. I am sure you know there are many other ways to "chill out" for a while.
For me, doing this scares me because once I got stuck in that "spaced out" place and could not find my way back.
It is a good idea to have many ways to relieve stress in case one method does not work all the time. Best Wishes

youre just spacing out/daydreaming.
yeah you're like stuck on the spot, and even if someone moves in front of it, you dont really notice? lol

To me it is daydreaming. Like no one else is around and you are in a trance. I think we do it to give our mind a break!

The word "ruminate" derives from the Latin for chewing cud, a less than gentile process in which cattle grind up, swallow, then regurgitate and rechew their feed. Similarly, human ruminators mull an issue at length.

But while the approach might ease cows' digestion, it doesn't do the same for people's mental health: Ruminating about the darker side of life can fuel depression, said Yale University psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, PhD, in a Board of Scientific Affairs invited address at APA's 2005 Annual Convention.

What's more, rumination can impair thinking and problem-solving, and drive away critical social support, she said.
