Why do people say "stop worrying"?!

Question: This has always been a pet peeve of mine, if you are really worried about something and someone says, "Stop worrying" or "Worrying does you no good."

In my mind, if you are someone who is prone to anxiety (and I am one of those people), you are just plain prone to anxiety. Yes, you can figure out some good ways to manage it, but the last thing you need is for someone to tell you, "Stop feeling how you feel." It seems equivalent to "shut up, I don't want to hear it."

Why do people do this?

That's a pet peeve of mine also. Stop worrying sounds like shut-up to me, too. I can see if I dragged something on, but if it's a new issue, well, it's my choice to worry. Sometimes, people can be too cavilier about things, and a little worry keeps things in check. And who the heck is someone to tell you how to feel? What cheek!!! Hey, have a great day.

I agree with you 100%!!!!!!!
I think people do this because they don't have any idea of what they can possibly do or say to make you feel better.
Is there anything thay COULD say to make you feel better...? Chances are NO.

Wow. Never thought of it that way but you are right..... What people mean is try not stressing about it because we can't change it.

I hate "It could be worse."

Be honest, what does worrying do for you?? It isn't good in so many wasy. It's not good for your immune system, your pshyce (sp), your physical. If stressing about it makes light bulbs go off in your head, then by all means stress away. I just don't think it helps. BUT I never saw it the way you've explained it. So I'm def gonna be more considerate of everyone. Thanks.

i agree. why do they just stop worry. its not a switch you can turn on a off.

they think that some how by just saying stop worrying that you will and all will be rosie in the garden ..like yeah if it was that easy don't they think that you would have done it by now,
its used as an invisible plaster . we know that we carnt stop the worrying and so do they, so why say it i think they say it because they don't know what else to say. and feel as though they have put a bit of input to the situation when in fact all they have done is wind you up. by stating the obvious but the obvious for who??its like saying to a alcoholic right don't have another drink ,,or a drug user right don't take any more drugs,,, we are the way we are and if we worry then we are going to worry. i think that the people around us will need to start worrying the day we STOP

cause they don't want to face the fact that they don't want to relize what is going on in the real world
