I have a fear of driving.?!

Question: I'm going to be 29yrs old in March. I'm afraid of driving after being in a car wreck several times. My dad was driving all those times. He had road rage. We were originally from Cali, he calmed down after we left but none the less.... I'm still afraid. I can drive in this small town. I'm just afraid of messing up somehow. I am no longer nervous of driving straight lines etc but I don't want to go on main highway's I'm afraid of merging on the ramp lol... Anyone else have fears like this? I can't drive with my husband either he makes me more nervous than driving. My brother helped me get into driving. He is really calm.

Start slow. Practice driving in a vaccant parking lot work yourself up to small country roads and so on.
I was always afraid of merging of the the ramp but i had to one day and since then my fear has subsided. I too have been in many accidents, such as wrecking on Christmas in 2005 and my father's b-day in 2006, and was scared of driving afterward but I starting driving again and my fear subsided. You can definitely overcome this fear with determination. GOOD LUCK!

I dont know if you have to drive or not but I am 37 and choose not to. I have a drivers license and everything I am just to afraid to drive. Sometimes I think why should other people be able to drive with no fear but its just not for me. You have been through an ordeal with the car and normally you should face your fears and get on with it. If you really want to drive that is. If you dont, walking is nice and if the transportation lines are good, use them. I dont burden people and ask them to drive me places so I dont get nagged on about why I dont drive!

Absolutely your not alone.!!. just gradually start doing those things. I haven't gotten on an on ramp to a freeway driving in about 10 years. I live and work in the same town. Sometimes the overpass will make me panic. But if you really need to drive on the highway, get your brother to go with you and drive with someone until you feel more comfortable again. its not the end of the world, you will regain your confidence again.. Just don't take pills to make you well, do it on your own!!!

Sorry to hear that.
These fears may have to be worked through, with a counselor.
Many people who have been in accidents feel the same way.

As for those who make you nervous while driving,
tell them what their nervousness does to you,
and ask them if they could be quiet while along for the ride.
Put your "foot down." Tell whoever is riding with you, they must respect you, or not go. If they won't abide, perhaps you don't need them in the car with you, at least for a while.
I pray your husband finds understanding in his heart,
and shows compassion toward your situation.

Blessings to you and yours.

I had a similar problem, only I had the accident I rolled the car...Shortly after, I was driving and I had to pullover because I thought I was having a heart attack, I was only like 22. low and behold it was anxiety... since then I have been on anxiety meds It has done miracles for me, you might want to look in to them, just until you get over this fear and get some counseling over what your Dad put you through...I have been there I can under stand I'm sure ya love him , but they have the strangest ways!!! you seem to have misplaced fears toward male drivers cause of him...

My grandmother developed a fear of driving and hasn't driven in years (although she does have a license for identification purposes.) She's comfortable with her decision, but her friends often urge her to try to overcome the fear rather than respecting her.
It might make it harder to get around, but it's up to you whether you want to conquer the fear or just accept it.
