Gentle encouragement with one chore at a time. Start with simple tasks, validate, reward and move to the next task. If you are clear that you know and understand that sometimes he doesn't feel motivated you can then share that he will feel better if he can accomplish even little things. You didn't say how old he was which also makes a difference. There is a developmental aspect to helping individuals with this disorder. This neurological disorder has a variety of aspects and depending on what type of schizophrenia he has, the world can be a frightening place if seen through your son's sensors. Reasurance of safety, reality checking, good hygiene, good medication routine and encouragement with healthy rewards can be part of the road to living well. The impact of the schizophrenia, ie, fears and visual perceptions of the world, can be mitigated with good monitoring of medication, too much or too little can make a big difference and requires good medical attention which you already know; if attended to and a good balance is found for your son he can live a meaningful life. There are multiple variables, some kids do really well as time passes as they learn to cope. Each is different. Depending on your state and services available, there is job coaching for future employment. Hope this was helpful

Maybe when your family is together, bring people he doesn't know. that way when he is with family, he is also with new people so he can feel comfortable with strangers. that could be a launch for the more difficult things. good luck!
