Why do I feel like therapy is a waste of time?!

Question: You're sitting there opening your soul to someone who is only listening because they're being paid. Who knows if they truly care about you. I've been in therapy almost 2 years and I've gotten nothing out of it. Do you think I'm wrong in thinking it's a waste of time?

I have been to a ton of therapists in my years and finally gave up on it and I am a much better person for it.

I actually talk to my friends now, and go out and do things instead of wait around for my stupid appointments.

At one point I messed with a therapists head so bad she cried.... I would just go to her sessions to vent...

You have tofind someone who you "click" with. Alll therapists are not the same. Go see somone else and don'tt give up!

I felt exactly the same way to be honest.
Ask for a change of therapists, you will find someone you just "click" with.
Try not to think about the fact that it's their job...after all, they got into the therapy career path because they wanted to help people, so they do care :)

Good luck :)

Talk to a different therapist, look into a cognitive-behavioral counselor. Your therapist should be more engaged in your therapy than that. Maybe ask your physician for a recommendation of someone to see?

I agree. If you don't have a good therapist that can relate to you you are wasting your time. They sit there saying uhhum and using examples about their self that shows they have no clue.
Then you leave with the same problem(s) you went in with.
Or else they are trying to get you hooked on a bunch of psychotropic drugs.
I had to go once a month for a couple years and all I ever thought was I could be spending these two hours (to and from) actually doing something productive.

My suggestion:
Type it in the search engine and study the problem yourself.
Buy a book on self (empowerment, esteem) whatever

Do you have measurable goals to your therapy? Do you and your therapist sit down regularly and say, "This is where I am, and this is where I want to be" using some objective measure? You wouldn't take a medication for two years with no proof that your physical health was improving; don't spend money and time on therapy for two years with no sign that your mental health is improving.

Here are two things I think people should know about successful therapy. First, the most important predictor of whether therapy will be successful is if, after the first session or two, the patient thinks that the therapist has listened well and understood them. That factor, simple empathy, predicts outcome of therapy better than the training the person has received or the technique they use. Like the other answer said, do you click?

Second, therapy is a treatment and patients have a right to measures to show that it is a successful treatment. There are objective measures of symptoms and symptom severity. There are also behavioral measures--maybe you would like to go out with friends more, drink less, weigh less, become less emotional when talking to a parent or ex, etc. You should be able to see clear changes in your life to justify your investment.

Talk to your therapist about what you want and his or her plan to get you there. If nothing changes, it's time to walk away. You can either find another therapist, who will set goals with you, or you can build a strategy to make changes in your own life without help, depending on your problems, their severity, and how much help you need. A consultation with a doctor or psychologist you have no intention of seeing as a regular therapist (make this clear up front) can give you a good sense of what your choices are.

This is a sign you have not found the right therapist.
Ask yourself, "What do I want in a therapist?"
"How will I know when I have found the right therapist?"
For me, having the right therapist makes me able to feel the sincerity coming through. I can feel the caring and interest she shows. She is a GEM!
