What do u think of ppl that take meds for depression?!

Question: I ask because my mother (whome i no longer speak to for many reason) use to always put down ppl that take them, make very rude remarks, and make them out to be crazy. (however i never agreed with her veiws) So I been going through depression myself and was given Zoloft to take, I find myself kinda ashamed of it cause of what ppl might think of me. So im just wondering what you all think about it. Thanks.

I think you are very brave. Just think about it. Ur helping yourself. Your trying to get better. Unlike a lot of people. You have nothing to be ashamed of. There is nothing wrong with getting help. Ur mom is very close mind. Good luck.

Who cares what others think? If it helps you and makes you feel more functional and normal then go for it. You should put yourself first.

Your mother is prejudiced and irrational. Taking medicine for depression is no different from taking medicine for influenza or other physical illness. You are unwell; the medicine is supposed to help you heal. It's that simple. Anyone who doesn't get that can take a hike.

Emerson said "fear springs from ignorance" and it's absolutely true. I imagine your mom did not know a great deal about anti-depressant medications. I've taken Effexor XR for about 2 years now and have been very open about it. Most people do not treat you any differently than they did before. I've found from observing myself and others who take depression meds that other people will react more to how you present it.
For example, if you take depression medication & make it a big secret or do something like cry from shame if a friend discovers it then they will be under the impression than it's a bad thing. If you treat it like any other kind of treatment, such as a diabetic taking insulin, and therefor no big deal I've found most people will not see it as a big deal either.

It is nothing to be ashamed of. Depression is just a disease much like any other. It isn't shameful to take medicine for a back problem so why should it be shameful to take medicine for a chemical problem?

I take meds too. I am not embarrassed. I have a medical condition that I am treating with medicine. People can be so ignorant.

Why does anyone have to know about your personal life and what medications or medical problems your having? You don't have to tell anyone yeah know. So if this is how you feel then stop telling people. Simple

I've been taking Prozac daily for depression for 21 years now! & will have to remain on it for life. Depression is caused by a lack of Seratonin in the brain, anti-depressant medication simply increases the seretonin levels. There are many kinds of depression brought on by various causes, some people only need a short course of anti-depressant medication, some people need them long-term. Like a Diabetic needs insulin for quality of life, some people need seretonin. It's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. It's very sad that there will always be a 'stigma' attached to mental health problems. There is nothing wrong with taking medication.

Mental Disorder Statistics in America
Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 22.1 percent of Americans ages 18 and older-about 1 in 5 adults-suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. When applied to the 1998 U.S. Census residential population estimate, this figure translates to 44.3 million people. In addition, 4 of the 10 leading causes of disability in the U.S. and other developed countries are mental disorders-major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given time.

The commission on mental health concluded that one person in seven living in the United States, would at some or the other time require professional treatment for emotional disturbances. Additionally some 12% of school age children are clinically maladjusted and some 3-6 % of the aged population suffers from organic psychoses. The statistic have not improved over the last several years in fact they reflect only the tip of the iceberg, many people live their lives, or episodes of their lives, in quite suffering and desperation needing but never seeking, professional intervention.

Depression Statistics
Depressive disorders encompass major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is included because people with this illness have depressive episodes as well as manic episodes.

Approximately 18.8 million American adults, or about 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year, have a depressive disorder.
Nearly twice as many women (12.0 percent) as men (6.6 percent) are affected by a depressive disorder each year. These figures translate to 12.4 million women and 6.4 million men in the U.S.
Depressive disorders may be appearing earlier in life in people born in recent decades compared to the past.
Depressive disorders often co-occur with anxiety disorders and substance abuse.
Major Depression Statistics
Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and established market economies worldwide.
Major depressive disorder affects approximately 9.9 million American adults, or about 5.0 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year.
Nearly twice as many women (6.5 percent) as men (3.3 percent) suffer from major depressive disorder each year. These figures translate to 6.7 million women and 3.2 million men.
While major depressive disorder can develop at any age, the average age at onset is the mid-twenties.
