Direct answer; she needs to talk to her doctor.

"Wellbutrin", "Paxil", could be the ones (but I can not guarentee).

There is also a new medicaton developed in Europe last year, which uses Melatonin (I don't know the name, and it may have nightmare side effect as well, since it uses melatonin, which promotes sleep).

Wellbutrin is a dopamine-using anti-depressant.

Many of the popular anti-depressants use Serotonin. This could lead to nightmare, as serotonin is made while sleeping.

Paxil, although it is a classic SSRI, is not known to cause nightmares.

But personally, I highly do not recommend Paxil to anyone, this drug is know to have other bad side effects (some are worst of all).

Alex is right.

It's very difficult to predict how a certain anti-depressant will react to individuals.

Every individual reacts to the drug in different way. In other words, what works well to a certain group of people can work horrible to other group of people.

I myself had taken Zoloft before, and it gave me bad nightmares.

Your friend could try a few alternatives;

1. Switching to Wellbutrin.

2. Trying non-serotonin use anti-depressants.

3. Adjusting the current medication dosage, until she has no more nightmares (consult to the doctor about this).

4. And as the last choice, take Paxil (risk of slow metabolism, strong sexual side effect, overly sleepy all day long, etc.)

i am a psychologist and i have been suffering with depression for many years now. I also have been prescribed by my psychiatrist antidepressants, actually Efexxor like your girlfriend.
The response and the side-effect of these medications is very much on an individual basis. It is not possible to generalise because each single individual ha s a different response and possible side effects. I personally don't have nightmares, for example. I really would encourage your friend to discuss these side effect with a psychiatrist (rather than a GP) to find possibly an alternative medication. There are now a lot on the market. Also, medications alone do not heal a depression. It is always advisable to follow a psycho-therapeutic setting as well. Hope this help, and good luck ;-)

i too have suffered from nightmares while taking anti depressants. my doctor suggested to me to switch from taking them in the morning to the evening. though it did take a while i did note a significant improvement. if your girl friend is taking them in the morning she might find the switch worth while, though its best to check with her doctor first.

Write this question down to ask your doctor the next time you see him/her.

I have never had nightmares on Zoloft
