Benadryl has anti-psychotic properties?!

Question: I was told that the active ingredient in Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is also used in anti psychotic medicines. Is this true, or is it a myth?

Answers: I was told that the active ingredient in Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is also used in anti psychotic medicines. Is this true, or is it a myth?

yes. Diphenhydramine has very, very weak SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) action.

i dunno, but i do know that benedryl helps put those psychotic people to sleep!

Benadryl is given to people taking anti-psychotic medications because it counteracts the negative side effects of the antipsychotics.
Benadryl itself is not an antipsychotic nor is it contained in antipyschotic meds.

It's not an anti-psychotic. It helps some people to sleep. My son is bipolar, which is a form of psychosis, and he used to take Benedryl to help him sleep. He has allergies, so he killed two birds with one stone!

I'm going to add here that I get a paradoxical effect from Benadryl - it causes aggressive behavior! Apparently a lot of people with bipolar disorder get paradoxical effects, so I mention it here. If I get poison Ivy really bad and have to take benadryl, I make sure I clear anything stressful off my calendar.

PS Thorazine (the first antipsychotic med) does clear out your nasal passages really good. The reason that it wasn't marketed for that is because the side effects are so bad. So it was inflicted on helpless mental patients instead, who had no effective means to protest. I took thorazine for awhile, and my nose was really clear!
