People cut for a variety of reasons. Some of these include: as a form of expression because they can not verbalise their emotions; a form of release for anger, fear etc that they can not get out any other way; a way to feel loved or cared for, either because they feel that way when they are looking after the wound or because they were taught at an early age that pain=love; because they need the calming feel good feeling caused by the release of endorphins; as punishment either for themselves, or somebody they don't feel that they can or should punish (such as a parent), there body become a substitute for the person they are really angry with; in order to feel physical pain to replace their emotional pain; in order to feel something when they are numb; in order to feel less when they feel too much.

The above are not all of the reasons people harm themselves, just some of them. One person might cut for some of those reasons, or all of them at different times. Essentially it is a way of coping or dealing with things that someone has come up with because they were not taught healthy ways of coping.

As for why people are 'emo'. I don't know. If you mean why are they emtionally unstable, well I think that would depend on the person. Could be a result of depression, abusive past, anything really. If you mean why are they part of the 'emo' culture, my guess is much the same reason I was a 'goth' when I was a teenager. I like the clothes, I liked the music and when I was with my 'goth' friends I felt I could be myself, depression, cuts and all without having to hide who I was. I identified with that group, that's all. I should also point out that there were many happy, healthy Goths who didn't cut or otherwise self injure and the same is true of emo's. They don't all cut or suffer with mental illness either.

I hope you find this answer useful. Not sure if it was the sort of response you were looking for or not.

I asked almost the same question a month ago and here is the best answer that was chosen by vote:

"It releases pain-killing endorphins, which give people a kind of high and helps them calm themselves down. If you ask them, most will say to make emotional pain more tangible. For other people its just a form of cry for help; they hope people will notice and pay attention to them."

If they create a tangible pain it helps them stop thinking of the pain that is haunting them emotionally.

these kind of people usually felt alone and think everybody are against them, eventhough its not. things got worst when they had a bad moments like exam failure, heartbreak, death etc... when they no longer could take it, cutting themselves for them is the easiest way to run away from all the problems(actually they never think about dying). its just that they dont want to cope with their problems at that time...

I use to cut myself when I got upset, mad, hurt,or anything that made me feel bad. The reason I did it is because that is how I taught myself to deal with everything. If someone would make me mad and so on I would start cutting myself up and it made me feel better after I did it. Instead of going after the person and getting in trouble I took it out on myself. Everyone deals with issues different then others. I now do not cut myself anymore because I learned to cope with everything differently.
