Major Depressive Disorder....and friends and family?!

Question: Is it common to lose "good" friends while you are sufferring through Major Depressive Disorder? These are the people who supposed to know you best. Of course in the beginning you hide how you have suicidal ideations, that you feel so lonely, that you have so much pain inside but once you seek help and get on meds and work through your issues....it just seems like I have less friends now that I have resolved my issues.

Has anyone else lost good friends and or out of touch with family since your diagnosis because they didn't seem to believe that you are worse off than they thought you were?

Yeah it is typical to lose friends even best friends when you've got depression. They get a bit freaked out when you talk about suicide, it doesn't make them feel good on the inside and a lot of them can't handle it.
And while you're stuck at home or whatever, they're still of leading their lives and you just drift apart.
Or some don't believe you/believe how bad things are.
Most people I know don't understand my condition. They don't understand how bad it can get and they don't believe me when I explain it to them. Even doctors don't understand. I have to get my mother to explain it to them and then they believe me. It is so frustrating. I'm 23, people should believe what I say and not make me get my mother involved.
