The ability to tune out painful experiences at will. Is this healthy?!

Question: My friend is currently in love with someone who doesn't return his affections. He's been having a hard time lately since they're very close friends and she'll be getting married in the next few days.

Today while driving on the road in tears, he decided to pull to a stop before reaching the traffic lights---not wanting to be seen in that state.

He says he was able to turn off his emotions at will---switch off his feelings altogether and continue his journey home. This has happened before in other instances and he thinks something might be wrong psychologically.

What happened if anything and---if so---is it something to be concerned about?

that is very unhealthy. it is called repression. it will eventually blow up on you and cause a much worse situation and much worse mental health. encourage him to get counseling before it erupts into a worse problem.

I dont think so, i dont really feel emotions anymore (ive trained myself). emotions are illogical, and lead humans to make illogical desicions. they are simply their to make us feel better when times are stressful(happyness, love), and to make us not want to do activities that might hurt others (sadness, compassion).

the only emotion worth holding onto is happiness, everything else shud b let go, and ya, emotions can often lead to illogical actions or thoughts that just come back to bite u in the *** later on
