How can you figure out if you have bipolar disease?!

Question: I would say that in most cases, you would see tremendous differences in energy level and the amount of sleep you need. Like in mania, maybe you sleep 2 to 4 hours a night, or even less, and are happy with that. You might otherwise be very hyper. And in depression, sleep maybe 12 or 16 hours a night/day and can hardly drag yourself out of bed. Bipolar depression is an "atypical" depression - most people with major depression have insomnia. Bipolar disorder is very disabling when you are having an episode. There are a lot of other symptoms on the list, but the changes in energy level are unique with bipolar disorder.

Not everyone has these pure symptoms though, you can get mixed moods. That's what I have all the time. Most people with bipolar disorder are not sick ALL the time, though. These complications are why you need to see a psychiatrist. Skip the GP,. if you have disabling symptoms, go right to the psychiatrist.

you would have to go to the doctor tell him/ her your symptoms to get properly diagnosed

DO not self-diagnose. But do go online and take some questionaires, print your results out and show them to your regular doctor. I have been diagnosed a.d.d. my whole life and only recently realized and been diagnosed as manic depressant. We changed my meds and I am doing great socially/academically. Do speak with your doctor and find support through friends and loved ones. Good luck, I hope you get the help you need.

You can't really. It's probably easier for a relation to see. If you're bi-polar, what you're doing at any one time seems perfectly sensible. It takes an observer to see that you're being a twAt on a high. Only a psychiatrist can diagnose for sure.

YOU normally cant figure it out...but your doctor can. In the meantime, here are some symptoms pulled right out of the book:

episodes of mania (feeling on top of the world, spending lots of money you may not have, being riskier than normal because you feel invincible)

episodes of depression (feeling worthless, sad, hopeless, unable to function because of these feelings)

there may or may not be time in between episodes, and episodes can last anywhere from a few days to months. You probably wouldnt notice this though; your family or close friends would probly be the ones to point it out (it is not easy to deal with). If it sounds like you, do what the first poster said and do some online tests and show them to your doctor. They are the only ones who can diagnose and give meds to help stabilize the chemicals in your brain.

hold a magnet to your head and if it don't stick your bi -polar
