Can you ever recover from depression?!

Question: Can you fully recover? Or will I always suffer from this?

Thanks :)

So many factors. never say never :)

I'm getting mild treatment for it now. I'll be all right when I'm employed again, so I know the cause for this disabling period. Trouble is, I really don't feel like filling stupid application-forms just to be rejected again.

You can get worse but you will get better. It is a chance to self-analyse yourself and, with self-knowledge, become stronger. Really you need to understand what's causing your depression. Lots of people come through it and because of the experience will leave better lives.

Important: If ever you feel suicidal, get medical help.

Also, don't let what helpful people (other than professionals) tell you such as "Pull yourself together." This is your illness and you'll find the right way eventually.

Whether or not you'll fully recover is an issue. Some people just suffer from depression - Winston Churchill, Stephen Fry and many more - which may just mean a day or two of 'poor me' and should be treated like a bout of flu - take time out for yourself and sort it through. Also, if you are a deep-thinker or artistic, you may suffer from what alchemists called 'melancholy' and that's a perfectly acceptable way to be. Part of the problem is that there are so many positive-thinkers about and especially Americans who believe that everyone should be in a constant state of happiness that us gloomy intellectuals are being marginalised and we think we're depressed :P

Anyway, finding the source of your depression will help you most. Write or paint about it. Good luck.

I don't know that you will ever make a complete recovery, there will probably always be bad days but you will learn to recognise when they are starting a find a method of dealing with them that works for you. Things do get better though, even though it might not seem like it right now.

I remember reading that an adult suffers, on average, four episodes of depression in a lifetime.
Don't be afraid to ask for help.

of course.

what is your diet like?
what exercise are you getting for 15-60 minutes per day?
what relaxation techniques are you practicing twice daily 20 minutes each session?

address these and the original causes and conditions of your "condition" and it will cease.

I am a therapist in Colorado.

Yes of course, you just need to retrain. Depending where your depression is from.. Just like someone who is overweight needs to retrain there diet, someone who is addicted to drugs, cigarettes, etc need to retrain their habits, you need to retrain your thoughts..

yes , you can fully recover, there are alot of good medications, follow with your psychiatrist and be compliant on meds

No. I have had seven and I have died from each one.

depends 50 50
you can never really unless you have memory
surgery but thats out the question
its always going to be in your mind

Depends on the the type of depression you have. If it's situational, it'll most likely go away with time or once things in your life change. If it's a chemical imbalance, it probably won't ever go away. But there are ways to deal with it. Medication helps in the beginning to lift your mood to start dealing with the symptoms and allows you the energy to start making changes. You probably wont need meds all your life - maybe just 12-18 months until you're stable. If you make it a priority to deal with the reasons for your depression, I think you will be able to live a fulfilling life. There will always be good and bad days... its just a matter of learning how to deal with them.

Hi Like the other person said you can have good days or not so good days with depression. I suffer from depression and take antidepressants which help me alot, depression is caused by alot of things like a chemical imbalance in the brain.

I'd advise going to the the doctors if not already doing so, also I will say that I also take GINKGO BILOBA, which helps as well.

You deserve to feel good and happy, hope this info helps.

well depends on what situation you are depressing about like example if you have lost someon who is really close to you it will be at least few years to recover but remember too much depression can cause high blood pressure and other things.

other depression about you weight appearence etc you'll be able to recover in no time.
to get over depression just try enjoy life do some new hobbies with friend and i'm sure you'll recover from depression

Have you tried behavioral theraphy? It helped me a great deal. Yoga is also a great way to channel your mind through meditation and get a great excercise.

Yes you can fully recover from depression, I did ,a few years back i met the love of my life ,Everything was going great then all of a sudden she leaves me for some other guys ,man i was so depressed i wanted to die a slow painful death , So i smoked 4-5 pack of cigarettes a day got drunk everyday slept 1-3 hours daily ,But that didnt seem to help the process so i decided to step it up a notch , So i loaded up my A-R 15 assult riffle and when i was about to pull the trigger i felt someone pull the riffle away from i was helpless ,The pain of losing her was so bad ,But from that day on i turned my life around ,By going to church ,I have faith in GOD .And he helped me get over my depression ,It wont happen overnight to get over depression it will take some time but trust me turning to GOD for help is well worth it.

Yes. For the last year, I've been completely non-depressed (I'll never call myself "normal") for like a year now. It's been really great.

You can fully recover and have a good life... got to work at it though.

The short answer honey is yes. You can fully recover.
The long answer is, it takes time okay.

You will have good days, you will have not too bad a day days. You will also get the bad ones.

The good ones and the not too bad ones will always be more than the bad ones providing you do a little bit of training yourself.

That training means, try not to let the things that seem bad get a grip on you, see them as a bit of a challenge or something different.

The most important rule of all is to start feeling good about yourself okay.

That rule is quite simple, first thing every morning when you get out of bed, is go the bathroom, look in the mirror and say out loud
"good morning you wonderful person" and smile.
Last thing at night before you go to bed do the same thing again.

As silly as it may seem to some people this is a positive start and end to the day.

You are a special person so tell yourself that.

When you go out and someone is walking towards you, give them a smile and say hello and keep walking.

These are just a few of the things that I was told to do and they worked, I lost count of how many people smiled back and even said thank you to me.

Just that alone boosts your confidence and makes you feel glad you went out.

And whilst you are out study some faces, you will see many many expressions and a lot of them will look like they are sad, thats because they too have problems, so when you smile
at them and they smile back, well youv'e helped them as well.

So train yourself to do those few things, everything else will gradually fall into place and before you know it you will see a question on this site that is similar to yours and you will give a similar answer because you know it will work.
God Bless you honey, keep your chin up, smile in the mirror in the morning and the evening.
Be lucky sweetheart.

Everyone gets depressed sometime in their lifetime. When it starts to affect your life, or if it lasts for too long then you need to get help. But you can fully recover, especially if you have a healthy diet and incorporate exercise into your lifestyle.

I think you can, but maybe you will be susceptible once you have started with depression!

YES YOU CAN.. as im a recovering one..
my depression stemed from my childhood.. ive faced it and dealt with it.. so yes you do recover..
i believe depression is something that you cant shake off in your life unless you realise what it is thats makeing you feel that way..
when you do ; youve faced it .. instead of running away from it..
depression is an illness and there has to be something thats caused it..
always remember that..

dunno guess youll go up and down all your life.. not unless you meet some wonderfull person who can turn your thoughts around.
