I'm dyslexic and....?!

Question: I have problems with certain things, like spelling, or communicating thoughts. I can have a crystal clear image of what I want to say in my head but can't get the right words out to let people know what I'm saying. I also have a studder and a lisp so I need to talk slow, I think some people think I'm retarded, I'm not stupid or I wouldn't have scored 119 on an IQ test when I was 12. I think I my have a problem with ADD too. My parents didn't have me tested for it because they didn't want me drugged, and I thank them for that, but my mind will wander off or I'll start babbeling. And I'm also thinking this is why I can't remember things I need to do. Any suggestions on this???

You seem to be highly intelligent. But maybe this will explain what you are wondering. As we grow, various learning center areas of the brain develop & an assortment of learning tasks that are before us happen. But when and where they don't, you have some degrees of learning and response impairment. Doesn't mean you're not intelligent. As an extreme example: Helen Keller was born blind and deaf and yet she learned and was a brilliant person! This tells us that many times we have impairments but that in no way means we can not learn and be highly intelligent. You don't seem to have ADD or you'd not be able to sit at the computer and write. You may have some attention difficulty because some of the cognitive development steps early in life were passed over with out you mastering them. But then again, you seem to have turned out great. Don't let the few issues you mentioned get to you. Work on skills to help you focus and maintain attention and the speech matters will with time go away: go slower and take your time. I wish you well my friend! Dr Steve

I don't know what it's like to be in your shoes but it seems that you do pretty well with typing. (Assuming that YOU are typing and not someone else)

How about just writing or typing your words instead of saying them?

It's the only thing besides medicine that I can think of. Hope it helps.

Think out everything you want to say, and practice it in your head first. Do what you did when you typed that post.

Don't let it hinder you. People have overcome it, including George W Bush.
