Do anti-depressants work and are they addictive?!

Question: Ive been very unhappy for the last few years. Im single, balding, fat and live at home with my parents, im 28! I have no money and keep losing jobs. I smoked weed everyday for 7 years but quit it 6 months ago as i was getting very paranoid! Ive never had a relationship which makes me sad, a girl i was close friends with broke my heart once at 21 and i stopped caring about things. Recently ive been drinking more than ever and last week was so drunk in cant remember anything, my friend said i was trying to fight everyone and urinated against the bar got thrown out by the bouncers and tryed to fight them, i dont remember a thing! Im becoming the very thing i hate. Why do i get like this i want to be optimistic, i have quite a bit going for me why do i feel so sad? I have heard that the excesssive weed smoking can stop the release of the feel-good chemical in your brain? If the anti-depressants help the imbalance would that continue when stopped?

Firstly I have to congratulate you on stopping the weed, because it can cause depressed moods, but alcohol doesn't help either I'm sorry to say. But on the other hand they say the hardest thing is to first admit you may have a problem.
Anti-depressants can definitely help if you really have depression, the best thing to do is to see your doctor. They are the people that can really diagnose what is wrong.
Sometimes a psychologist can help too, talking things out with someone can help, but mostly this is suggested in conjunction with medication. I took anti-depressants for 5yrs straight and worried that I would never come off of them, but I have been off of them for 18mths now. One day I just forgot to take them, and didn't have any ill effects and didn't realise until I hadn't taken them for 2wks! But previously when the doctors wanted me to try coming off of them I had really bad side effects! Must have just been time!

yes, they work. But I do not think they are addictive. You may have to try a few different types of anti depressants, until you find one that works best for you. Please, do not give up hope, though! I am sure you will beat this depression that you are dealing with. Try some counseling, too, if the pills do not work alone! I have had good luck with journaling daily, too.

Anti-depressants work, but it is very difficult to predict which anti-depressant is right for which person as they are not truly understood yet. Therefore a trial and error phase is usually used in which a different kinds are used, then weened off of, then another type tried etc, until you find one that works.

However, there are different types of anti-depressants like SSRIs and MOIs, etc. So typically if one medicine doesn't work from the SSRI family, none of them will, so its logical to try a different family of antidepressants.

Although they are not psychologically addicted, you won't "crave" them, your body will begin to expect their presence in your system and going cold turkey and stopping your usage will result in terrible side effects, however, they can be weened off successfully if you listen to your doctor

Drinking is a depressent so no wonder u r depressed. And the more u do it ...the more depressed u get.STOP THE INSANITY!!
Yes antidepressants DO work but DUDE...you have to stop the drinking and smoking..that puts a bad chemical imbalance in your brain and no wonder you are sad and can't remember things...You need to go to a DR. and tell him the way you are feeling. BUT you have to stop the crap that you r doing! And once you stop the pot, drinking and get on antidepressants you'll see ..it may take awhile but hang out with some new people, learn to love yourself and if you don't know how???ASK SOMEONE for help.Antidepressants can be for short term or long and only you and your DR. know when it's right.Antidepressants put the good balances into your brain that negative thinking, drinking and pot smoking did.And get some good exercise and learn to eat good. Can't you talk to your parents??They might understand..you know they were teenagers one day not too long ago..Good luck!!!Just tell them you need help...they probably already know and if not your parents then call a hotline or something...BUT get help!

yea it would definately help. they work very well. now that im taking them i feel happy and confident again. go see a doctor and make sure ur honest with him/her that way he can prescribe you the right anti-depressant.
