Is his memory loss from meds or his head trama?!

Question: I have a friend who just got in an ATV accident and has a hematoma in his brain. He is on a lot of pain medicine and usually nods in and out of sleep when we visit.

I'm concerned because I talked to him today and he doesn't remember us being there. I've been there 3 times. I asked him if he remembers anyone else that has visited him, and he only remembers his friends from the firestation.

Is the medicine causing this or is this something more serious?

Oh and after we leave he sends a text message like thanks for coming to see me....
But then the next time he doesn't remember...

This is totally normal after traumatic brain/head injury. All I can say is, I hope he is regularly (as in once a month at the LEAST) seeing/following up with a neurologist. They treat TBI patients all the time and are experts on all the symptoms and outcomes of these things and can plan his best recovery and medication regimen, instead of just dispensing random pain meds. He should probably continue seeing the neurologist long-term as well. Keep an eye on him and tell his family to absolutely get him to a neurologist, not just his regular doctor. This isn't something to put off as the effects of TBI's can be long-lasting, can cause personality changes, intelligence and cognitive problems (which can affect his job opportunities and might need to go on disability if severe enough), and generally make it hard to live his life the same as before.

it could be either one or a combo of both

it sounds like brain trauma. give him time, maybe 3 months, he will eventually "re-wire" his brainpathways, and hopefully go back to normal. as far as meds, pain killers could be affecting his memory. hope things work out!-BluRey

Your friend has a serious headinjury. It is normal after headinjuries to have memory problems. This may or may not get better with time. Only time will tell if there are lasting problems.

I'm sorry but this sounds like Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) couild be the cause. Short term memory is always a common sign. They can remember things from a long time ago, but not what happen today,or yesterday.

It is normal after a head injury, the meds may make it worse
but he has to have them.
over time it will get better i think without knowing more
sounds like short term memory
i was in a hospital once, not a head injury though
and ppl would make comments about coming to see me and
didn't remember all of them.
but after a while i was ok.
