Is there any hope for schizo? (to be cured)?!

Question: my cousin whom we adopted since he was 3 months old will be turning 19 soon and been to mental hospital twice since he was 15.. now he lives with my old parents in Philippines and we buy all the necessary medicines for his mental illness but the problem is he became a brat and have drug addict friends,he befriended the wrong people.. hes been bullied a lot when he was in high school prior to showing his mental illness so being friends with this kind of kids in the street is like a connection for him so no one would bully him again. Problem is this delinquent friends have gotten his watch, fone even his shirts and sneakers and sometimes he would go home wearing a different kind of dirty shirt. He had learned to lie and steal to my mom who has been recently diagnosed with highblood and diabetes..I feel so helpless, I live in diff country now and what if my parents are gone, who will take care of him?

In the US, there are social service agencies that can help with keeping a person in safe housing and help manage their money and medications, etc. Maybe there is something like that in the Phillippines?

If a person has a serious mental illness, usually they are left to find their own friends and enemies, like anyone else. That is a problem when you see someone is being taken advantage of. What I have seen parents do with their developmentally disabled (mentally retarded) kids is make sure they know not to lend money to anyone, and never have more than like $40 in their pocket. They teach them a list of rules. So if they are taken advantage of, the impact will be minimized.

My husband is 68 and has high blood pressure (controlled by meds) and diabetes (controlled by meds) and he is fully able to handle things. I don't know your mom, but are you underestimating her ability to handle this situation? My husband's kids sometimes think we are so backward and dumb, but that is just society thinking older people are stupid. I bet either your mom or dad is sharp as a tack. I hope you are talking with them about your concerns!

All the best to you, it is wonderful that you care for your cousin so much!
