Post-Partum question?!

Question: My doctor prescribed me Zoloft for my post-partum depression and I've been hesitant in taking it cause I don't like when medicine makes you feel weird & I was wondering if any of you had been on it & what your take on it was & for the last couple days all I've wanted to do is cry and get away from everything but I need someone to keep me company so i'm not constantly sad and its affecting my ability to sleep how did you get through post-partum?

&& before anyone asks NO i'm not one of the people sad about their baby I LOVE my son I'm just depressed.

I was hesitant too, feeling I should be able to control my own mind. I will say that about the best thing I ever did for my own health was to start taking the Zoloft. It took awhile before the full effect was there, but I got my life back. Then I was more able to care for my kids and be the mom they needed me to be.

Be very cautious with post partum depression. Upside down thinking and sense of urgency can come over you in a matter of hours. Don't delay taking the Zoloft.

PP depresion is nothing to mess around with. Take the zoloft . You owe it to yourself and your child to be feeling better. Seriously, this can be dangerous.

I was on meds after the birth of my twins and still had a post partum psychosis that ended me in the hospital for 3 days. How I helped myself was got on another med and got into therapy. I also got extra help with my twins and as much sleep as I could get. Please take this seriously.

Post-partum depression happens with 1 out of 7 mothers. You are not alone. most of the time it goes away on it's own.

How long has it been since giving birth? If it's only been a week, I'd give it time before taking the prescription. I've never been on zoloft but I was on lexapro and another. I hated how I felt. I almost felt numb. When I wanted to cry I couldn't. I was very passive and not very happt either.

For a response to the above poster, post-partum psychosis happens with only 1% of births. It doesn't sound like you have psychosis, just depression

Good Luck!

I had post partum. As silly as this sounds when I got depressed I talked to myself and said these are your hormones going wild. I took meds for a week. Didn't like the effect and decided to go off. Eat healthy, take walks, start a scrapbook of your child, listen to music that is uplifting, don't watch the news, pray, keep yourself busy, find a mommy and me class, and realize that you have been through heart breaks with boys friends where you thought your heart was never going to heal and you made it through. This will pass in time. Go ahead and cry. Its good to release your emotions. I cry at Flinstones vitamins commercials. Your body is going through a hormonal change. It is just like having your period only a little longer. I promise it will get better. I will say a prayer for you. P.S. Rent some funny movies and hug your baby.

When I took this med, I didn't really feel funny or side effects from it. But it did help me. Like someone else said, post partum is nothing to ignore.

If you're breast feeding, I don't think it's a good idea to go on any kind of medication.

It has been proven that the best way to beat post-partum depression is to spend time with your baby. It might sound counter-helpful, but I promise you, it's the best cure. Nurse your baby or just watch him sleep or laugh, and your brain will flood with bonding chemicals, you just need to give it time. Or, if you can, try taking a walk. Exercise will always help.
