Have you ever swithced from one addiction to another?!

Question: For 4 months I abused pain killers (oxycodone & hydrocodone) and sleeping pills (Amitriptyline)... But I've been clean for a year and a half... But to compensate, I've been smoking a pack a day of cigarettes...

Anyone else ever have this happen?

Actually, yes, it's a lot more common than you think.
Most addicts, recovering or not, usually swap one thing for another: if you are off opiates, most likely you will take up another form of downers, so cocaine would be unlikely. Methadone goes hand in hand with pills. alcohol and weed are also compatible, and so on.
This was actually studied, and proven: addicts WILL most likely take up another form of addiction. Once your brain has been altered chemically, you will miss the "high", whether it be from Oxy or shoplifting!
But I congratulate you for staying sober, and if cigarettes are your only problem, then...a HUGE C O N G R A T S to you ! (most people would have switched to something worse). Good luck to you.

yes... when i got off drugs a year ago also, my smoking increased and coffee urges lol, totally normal but not so healthy, try some other things to do, hobbies, etc..

ya I switched to food from pot.

From alcohol to coffee. Sugar and nicotine have been with me for decades, before and after alcohol. And I've used about everything else that isn't injected.

That's a pretty normal pattern. Some psychologists say there is no such thing as an addictive personality, but I disagree.
I have been battling smoking for years - even quit for a year a time or two. But if I quit, although I can handle the physical withdrawals through the patch, etc, suddenly the nail-biting begins. For many people, addictions are not an escape - they are truly a habit, possibly due to nerves.
I have found SOME relief in medication for depression and anxiety, which can be behind many types of addiction. And, after all, your brain is an organ - it makes sense to give it what it needs. You wouldn't not take insulin as a diabetic, right?

i haven't, but a very close friend of mine used to do heroin and pain killers; to compensate, he gets drunk every day and smokes a lot of cigarettes.
he's the sweetest guy i know, but it's seriously doing a number on his health.
i think no matter what bad habit a person has, it's always going to be hard to break it, whether drugs, food, alcohol, cheating, gambling, etc.
i'm sure the best way out of any bad habit would be taking small steps, such as instead of smoking 20 ciggs a day, smoke 19. cut down until you're out of the habit.
then fine ways to cope with the stress(or boredom) or whatever caused the fixations to begin with.
i truly feel for you. good luck! :)

YES,
I was addicted to advise people,
whether they need or not.
Now I had switched to helping
them,whether they need or not.
My wife don't like all these.

Yes and you may have a addictive personality, I gave up drinking started smoking gave up smoking started eating started smoking pot gave up eating gave up pot started the painkillers gave them up and now I am trying to get addicted to exersize, food is winning but im going to beat it.

So common. I would have to say that over 90% of addicts often switch theri adiction. Thats why it is highly recommended that addicts dont drink or use other drugs. It very common for an addict to become an alcoholic if they continue to drink. If the amount of your smoking ir really bothering you, then try to quit or cut back. GOOD LUCK and congratualtions on being clean!

well it is an addictive personality you need to get clean from everything and never do anything agian even alchol

I switched from hardcore alcoholism to hardcore caffeine-ism! I found it rather productive, really. It's a lot easier to function on excessive caffeine than excessive alcohol...

yeah that's how i live my life unfortunately. From alcohol, to drugs, to cigarettes, to shopping, to food. It's endless.
