What are some thoughts on community mental health centers?!

Question: Are they beneficial to the client populations they serve? Do clients tend to get "stuck" in the system? What are the upsides and downsides?

Community mental health centers bring mental health care to the people who need it, by placing their services in the neighborhoods where people live -- getting it out of the downtown business districts. Not everyone can pay to go to the psychiatrists in high fancy offices. And not everyone would go.

A community mental health center's services are still a financial stretch for the average person. But they are certainly more affordable.

By bringing such a center into the immediate area, and by local people accessing it, some of the stigma of "crazies" melts away, as we see neighbors and family members with "problems" finding help and health.

From what I have observed with my friend who goes to county, they make a best-effort approach to mental care. He has been on several different medications over the years with little help to fix his situation (he has schizophrenia). Knowing that he is in some fairly severe stage of this condition I don't feel anywhere could do much, especially for conditions like that, so I think it really depends on how bad the condition is. Depression is fairly treatable, but that also depends on how severe. I firmly believe county is best served for the under-priviledged who need immediate care but do not have severe conditions. Even with full benefits, the most severe mental conditions are typically not the best in terms of results.

I'm having my assessment this thursday so that i can start going. Sounds like they have a load of activities on offer, and staff from my team working there. I'm looking forward to it. I'll start in a couple of weeks.

The upside to a community mental health center is that all the services are in one location. One can receive therapy and also see their doctor for medication. There is also different kinds of group therapy that might be helpful for some people.
The downside is having to see other people waiting in the waiting area for their appointments. It may not feel so private.

If people don't have insurance or poor insurance they don't get treated well or sometimes not at all.
