What can I tell myself to stop feeling so hopeless, depressed, and suicidal?!

Question: I am an intelligent person (too much so, probably) and when I look at the prospects for the future for my generation (generation X), I see nothing but trouble, misery, and decline. the US economy, based almost solely on the service sector is tanking, our government is completely out of touch with citizens (no healthcare, no higher education, etc), the global climate is changing, causing major problems, and - at the root of it all - the gap between the rich and poor is getting wider and wider.
So, why should I have any hope about the future? Why should I believe that if I'm honest and work hard, that I will be able to achieve "the American Dream"? Or any dreams for that matter?I mean, who is more honest and hard working - professional athletes, or school teachers? And I have lost hope that some new president will bring help; if they bring too much, they will probably get assasinated, aka JFK, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. I mean, aren't we all pretty much just f*#ked?

Just keep expressing your feelings. This is a good place to do that, Tell yourself that the only thing you have control of is yourself and now. When I get depressed I tell me I am depressed, and I give myself a short, (maybe a day sometimes), to feel it. I try not to think to much I just concentrate on the feeling and being in the NOW. I might cry or sceam or none of the above.
I don't use medication, only meditation. However you don't have to stop your medication to do this, This info works for me. Take it or leave it, it's your choice.

Tell yourself to find a professional to talk to & get on some anti-depressant meds. Granted, there are a lot of depressing things going on these days, but you don't have to fix them, just plug along living your own life the best way you can. I've been on prozac for years, & it has made it possible for me to get out of bed in the morning & get thru the days. You owe yourself a chance to get your life back.

Oh man. Your outlook on life is pretty negative. the first step, I would say, would be to talk to a counselor of psychiatrist. Perhaps its not just YOU, maybe its chemical...they can help you.

Im in your generation. I get where you are coming from. But, think of it this way, our world is changing SO FAST! Our generation is full of people who want to help, and lead, and make change. Pretty soon, the baby boomers will be too old...and it will be out turn to run the country. Though admittedly there are people on the other side of the spectrum...there are so many of us who CANT WAIT for change. GET INVOLVED! What are you passionate about? Fight for some rights. Picket something you despise. Support a candidate. Volunteer to speak to children, or visit the sick. Become a Big Brother to an underprivelaged child. ALL of those things will bring you a reward you could never bring yourself. All those things will help you see hope...not only for your future, but to the future of the generations after us. Take a stand. You wouldnt BELIEVE how rewarding it is!

There are people out there taking action and making a difference in the world. They are not betching like you are. So be more like them, we need more people like that. You may change the world, or you may not... but atleast you'll feel better.

tell yourself to stop doing things you don't like
