Anyone know of side effects of medication for ADHD on autistic children?!
Question: Help! My sons have been on medication for concentration and for resting at night. Over the course of a year, they have both put on at least 60 pounds each and I don't think it's healthy for them. Even though the meds help with their social and sleep patterns, it's given them extra baggage when they don't eat any more than they usually do.
Any suggestions or information on how to counteract this side effect?

You should talk to the doctor about this weight gain. It sounds excessive and unhealthy unless they were not at a healthy weight when they started on the medication. I think it's odd for ADD medication to cause this sort of weight gain.

What's going on is lots of people with any form of autism have food malabsorption issues and this can cause the types of foods they ate to handle the nutrition from them differently especially when drugs are introduced....
New material is coming out daily on the dangers of medication towards ADHD, best way to find out what is going on is researching the medication yourself. Many Doctors and even Pharmacist do not research what they prescribe, which in the end boils down to you having to do it. I can only advise you to research meds, as it is your sons future that is in the crosshairs. Sometimes the dangers outweigh the symptoms.
