Answers: I feel I'm suffering from depression and ADD by the way.

If you came to me I would try to make you feel comfortable and I would ask you what made you seek for help. I would ask how long you have been feeling bad and which feeling is the worst right now. I would also ask what you think the reason for your depression might be. Usually the conversation will develop it self. You might sit there and cry the whole time and that's OK. The most important thing is that you feel good about the chemistry between you and the psychiatrist and trust! It doesn't matter how skilled the psychiatrist is on the paper - it's the personality that counts! Good Luck!

I didn't know what to expect either, but when I first went it was very informal. I was sort of expecting to be laid down on one of those couch's, but it wasn't anything like that. I sat down and the woman was lovely and asked me questions. She really put me at ease - I felt for once like I could talk without feeling embarassed. I went because of OCD problems by the way, so yours may differ from mine. Have you been for an assessment? My assessment meant sitting with two people in a room while she asked "intimate" questions (just about my family life, education, sexual orientation etc). If you've had that then just expect an informal 2-way discussion. I live in the UK, by the way, so it may be different if you live elsewhere.

The psychiartrist will ask you lots and lots of questions about how you feel about life etc...

It won't be scary. A good psychiatrist will turn it into conversation. A bad psychiatrist will ask questions like a list of things that they read from a clip board!

All the best.

he's going to ask you what will seem like stupid questions but you need to be honest and give him the answers....trust him...he will help you so you have to give him honest answers

I have a low opinion of them.I tried 3 different ones, and I just suffered from empty wallet syndrome every time.I have worked things out myself.
If you benefit, great, just watch it.

The first session or two will be about who you are, where you are now, and what you want to get out of therapy. You will be doing most of the talking, and a good therapist will typically not say 'Your problem is this, and you need to do that to get over it'. You will have a lot to think about, and just verbalizing streams will help you understand things about yourself, and having someone that has no stake or connection to you to talk with can be very liberating. If you feel you're 'suffering' from ADD, that's probably not it, as most people with ADD or ADHD don't consider it stressful, just that they have a lot of interests, or that single interests don't hold them. Depression could be a reason for the lack of motivation to get anything done, but don't expect a (good!) psychiatrist to jump on the meds bandwagon- a lot of things in life just need to be examined and accepted or overcome. Good luck.

psychiatrist are jerks. they look at you like your crazy.
