My partner has had Bi polar & O.C.D for years. Why doesnt our doctor prescribe l!

Question: While its true that lithium is the often one of the first drugs used in medication trials in the treatment of bipolar, some people like myself are not receptive to it and/or have adverse reactions. Other medication alternatives used for mood stabilisation are anti-epileptics (IE tegretol), one of the newer drugs presently being favoured is lamictal which seems to have fewer side effects than other anti-convulsant medications.

It really comes down to what particular drug a doctor believes to be best suited to an individual's unique needs, symptoms and life style. Everyone has different needs and responses to different drug therapies, so if you have a preference or believe lithium may be a better medication, get your husband to discuss this with his doctor.

Explain why you feel the current medication is not suitable and your reasons for wanting an alternative prescription for lithium. But be guided by the doctor as they have the expertise and knowledge of what medication is the most appropriate for your husband's condition...

If you're not happy with doctor why don't you change?

A bi polar bear?

Whatever next?

Lithium is quite an old prescription to use, and that may be the reason why.

Im sure the doctor is prescribing what he thinks is best. Lithium isnt always the answer. Im bipolar and dont take lithium. There are loads of stabilizers. xxx

Lithium haz serious side effects my friend, it is a mood stabilser of course but is a very strong and a last resort drug usually for in patient care, speak to your GP there are other medicines that can control these conditions.. Very Best Of Luck..

find your partner something else to think about except themselves, better than drugs

My sister has bi-polar disorder and is not being treated with lithium.

Lithium was 60s first and only choice. Used to help only 30%. Today 1st choice is Epilim, helps 70% cases. More than other drugs. Im on Epilim/Trileptal/Taurine combination. Beautiful. Feel like new.

Lithium is almost as bad as thorazine as in you just feel like doing nothing , have no energy and no joy in life, you just wanna sit and do nothing and it makes your butt get bigger from lack of activity ! Request Trileptil it is very effective "treatment" with no LAZY or bad side effects!

I have taken lithium. It is a HORRIBLE drug. Made me so sick mentally, emotionally and physically. There are other drugs out there now that are better. Abilify, seroquel are two good ones. I take abilify as I have a form of bi polar disorder and it has worked wonders for me.
