Is it better to go through depression without medication?!

Question: naturally?, I have found that throughout my life there have been many times I have withdrawn from friends and family, for fear of anyone seeing me like this, but there are also times when I am really happy as well, and having a positive mood, it seems to balances out weeks at a time, never longer than weeks

I can't really see a doctor about the times I feel down, and I can't explain all the emotions I feel, but do mood altering drugs really help? I sometimes would smoke a little pot every now and then, but even with that, cessation of use cause some discomfort, sleeplessness, and loss of appetite, and exercising helps some, are these humans who never feel down or have any other emotions other than positive, what are they on, and is that even natural in itself ie: jehovah's witnesses, or mormons

have you ever taken medication for depression and then stopped? please share your experience

I've taken Lexipro for depression in the past and suddenly after taking it for a month I had no sex drive (as if that isn't depressing).

After taking it for three months it was not as effective and had to be upped several times.

After taking it for five months I was forgetting things all the time.

Then I stopped taking it.
3.5 years later I am still forgetfull, but my mind gets better every day.
My sex drive will never be the same again.

Not so sure that it was a good idea to try the happy 'pills' and I've found that a bowl of oatmeal and some brown bread do a heck of alot more for me when I am depressed (because it naturally raises the seretonin) than any pill that I've taken in the past.

Change your diet to whole grains and you won't need the medication.

Also I failed to mention that I lost 50 pounds and that helped alot with the depression.

Yes i take medication for my depression and am a mental health nurse??? I dont know why i have depression and carnt explain why i feel low in mood!If it is really worrying you please see your doctor,it may not even be the case of depression could me s.a.d? As for smoking pot not really good idea realy cut it out and dnt drink alochol for its a depressent. You may not be put on all medication but you could try talking to somesome or there are many therapy groups out there. i wish you all the best and you are never alone so ask for help xx

the best thing you can do is see a psychologist! and if they feel you need medication they can perscribe it to you! Good luck...and what ever you do please go and talk to someone..because not treating it is the worst thing you can do! I took antidepressants for a couple of months and it helped me out. after I found out I could not have another child, I was really bummed out, but the medication helped when I stopped taking it, I was O.K.

You seem as though you would like to at least give medication a go - and I think you should. After all, what have you got to lose from giving it a go?

A few years ago, I went on anti-depressants, and they did help me alot. I got better and now happy.

'Mood altering' drugs don't make you happy, then neutralize your emotions which results in you not thinking negatively about things - as though your mind is distracted from it.

In regards to pot, it might feel good in the short term, but I recently did a case study on it and statistics show that pot worsens depression.

There is no such thing as a person with no emotions other than positive - the only way you truly can be happy, is if you feel down sometimes. Therefore, people that may seem happy all the time may often feel lonley and upset when they are by themselves and put on a 'face' to others.

Jehovah's witnesses are just another form of Christianity, they are not 'happy happy happy' people, just proud of who they are. It's a sign of good spiritual health.

Spiritual health is one of the 4 vital components to be a healthy person, the others include physical, mental and social health. Spiritual health doesn't necessarily mean religious, it means beliving in yourself and having goals for the future.

I reccommend you seek doctor's assisstance, or if you are not interested in taking medication, try seeing a psycologist - they aren't as daunting as what people make them out to be. If not, just talk to someone you trust on a regular basis about how YOU feel, how your day was, and why you reacted to things in certain ways.

I hope you figure out something to help you, all the best.

I never went on medication, mainly because I grew up in a poor family and my mother didn't believe in doctors. She thought I had a demon inside of me.
I eventually became a christian which gave me more confidence, but then I had too much and left the church. But I was kind of topsy turvy for awhile.
