What do you call someone who can't function if..?!

Question: The room temperature isn't just right. In the car, in the house, in the office. Someone who can't go on if it's "too cold" or "too hot". Seriously, this isn't just a comfort thing, it affects their whole life.

On TV a couple weeks ago I saw a girl who genuinely does have the need to keep her body at a specific temperature.
That disease is very rare, though.

It is my observation and belief that there are some people in our world who want to be "in control" or are known for "being fussy". Some people are especially sensitive to a particular part of their environment, whether light, sound, temperature, foods, etc. and it really does make them miserable to experience anything outside of their comfort zone.

For a number of years after a head injury I found that loud sustained sounds including music or movies would impair my ability to reason and to function. And so, I would purpose to remove myself from the presence of loudness in order to be able to continue to function. (Like in church, if the music was played extra loud, I would excuse myself and wait in the lobby until it had finished, and then take my seat again) I found other people avoiding the music times for the same reason.

To answer your specific question, I really do not have a name for it. My mother would call it "peculiar".

Don't know, but it sound like s/he has a core temperature regulation problem. S/he should talk with her/his doctor at some length about it.

Maybe try posting in the general health section. This could well be medical, not mental.

It sounds like this has become an obsession for this person.
Adjusting the thermostat in a room may temporarily relieve stress they are feeling. This person may not realize this is what is going on. This may help them feel more in control of something that can be controlled.

Sounds like it's something wrong with the person's hypothalamus or a metabolic dysfunction. The hypothalamus might be detecting stuff that it shouldn't thus becoming sensitive to cold and hot. Or the chemical factors that go to the hypothalamus might be off balance as well. Usually if you visit a doctor it might get to a problem, if not then you need to see a specialist. But this is definitely a problem that needs to be checked out asap with some big machines to run tests on.

sounds like OCD to me, your friend might benefit from seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist.
