Daylight and exercise will help. You need to keep busy. It sounds like you are intelligent, bored and dissatisfied with your life. Make changes that will boost your spirits. When I'm restless at night I will often read a good book until I feel drowsy. Of course this can backfire as well. Sometimes the book is so good I can't put it down. lol. But most times it helps. A hot soak in the tub or hot shower before bed may help relax you as well. You may be in a vicious circle. You are depressed and can't sleep which can feed the depression. If my mind just refuses to settle down I will meditate. I start with a visualization exercise. Eyes closed, attention on your breathing and heart. Breath in through the nose, hold a few seconds and out through the mouth. focus first on your toes. Will them to relax. then ankles, legs etc. all the way up to your head. By then your mind should b clear of garbage thoughts. Keep up the breathing until you sleep. Depression can't really be sidestepped. It needs to be dealt with. There are many different types so you need to ID yours. I have SAD and use UV lights to help. I hope this helps. Let yourself feel better! You should also see a Dr. If this persists. Sleep deprivation can be a serious problem. Good luck!

No side-stepping depression, only facing and overcoming it.

As for the sleep... exercise during the day so you are utterly exhausted by the time you go to sleep. Try to set up a ritual like...always going to bed shortly after you shower or having hot chocolate just before lying down. I know, it sounds weird but it does work and after a week or 2 whenever you perform said activity you will get drowsy before you even crawl into bed. You may want to look into aromatherapy if you're into that kind of thing? Lavender is usually a good relaxing scent. If you're not a neat freak, make sure your room is clean. I can never sleep in my room if it's messy. Also, before you go to bed write out ALL of your thoughts and side-thoughts and blips of ideas so when you do lie down your head will be pretty well cleared of all strange random thoughts floating around in there.

anychance you have spoken with your dr about the problem sleeping? I have had the same issue and because I was not getting into (rem) deep sleep my body slowly began to shut down, (pain, faint, panic attacks, heart palpations). He told me to try benedryl, it worked I must say.
you could try chamomile tea, not while on benerdryl. This helps my son with his insomia. Maybe relaxing music or waterfalls, listening to rain. See link below about benadryl..
Good luck !
