I cant get anything done?!

Question: I've been meaning to clean out the garage and my closets but I havent "gotten around to it." There are little jobs around the house that I want to get done but I never do them. Instead I sit here on the computer all day checking my email, chatting wtih friends, and surfing the web. Even if I do start a task such as cleaning out the closet, I run back the computer to check my email "real quick" and the task never gets done. Sometimes I dont feel like leaving the house. I dont know whats wrong with me. What does it sound like?

Don't listen to Stars828. I don't think that procrastination comes from being ADD or having depression. I procrastinate too and can't help to check my email all the time as well, but it doesn't mean that I'm depressed. My husband is on the computer all day too. And there are days that I don't want to leave the house too because I'm just too tired from waking up at night all the time and having to feed a 10 week old baby. It doesn't help that my husband is gone all day at work as well, so that's why I try to spend less time on the computer during the weekends and push him to help me do things around the house (otherwise things will never get done).

There are people hooked on email addiction the same way there a lot of people that are hooked on text messaging, watching television and their cells. Do people who watch television for a few hours a day? No! With email, it's just the excitement of getting "new" mail and having something new to read, etc. I get depressed when I wake up in the morning to find my inbox empty. But it doesn't mean I am DEPRESSED depressed, just disappointed.

procrastination....it's a horrible thing!

I got it, too. It's called procrastinitus. Time to shut off the computer and get to work.

Sounds like you're easily distracted or addicted. Just unplug you computer and tell yourself that you wont turn it on until you get your tasks done.

Sounds like it's time to turn the pc off and focus on your task.

It sounds like you need to manage your time better.

Make a list.

Put it in priority order.

Start one job and don't do anything else until you finish the job.

"procrastination", its a illness not a disease

It sounds like me.

Sounds like depression or laziness. Sometimes its just hard to do stuff, it happens to everybody. Google the symptoms of depression and if you're having some of those (lack of sleep, appetite, etc) ask your doctor about some medications, therapy options, or holistic treatments.

I know what you mean and just shut off your computer and get your stuff done. It just sounds like you have no motivation

Sounds familiar... sounds like procrastination using the internet as a means to procrastinate.

I do it all the time and it drives me nuts too, though I'm in total control of it. I also end up feeling really badly that I didn't get done what I wanted to.

I've been trying to schedule time so that I have internet time and then when the time's up, I'm off and not back on until the schedule says so but that doesn't work so well with me. I guess some may say it's an addiction but what's really silly is there are times when I'm even bored on the internet but it's better [maybe] than going after that stack of clutter that is staring at me... as... I.. type... eep!

Ya ditto here your a procrastinator just like me!! what i do is this i give myself a list of tasks and then i say ok once its done i can use the pc or do something as a small reward!

Do u smoke pot??

It sounds like a bit of being lazy and procrastination. We all get like that every so often if it really is getting out of hand make a list and make up your mind to do 1 or 2 things per day and keep your computer off till you are done. It does feel so much better to accomplish somethings.

This internet is so addictive.Iam the same and i have 3 children.I try to get out and get some fresh air everyday.I try to do little things like that in the morning when i get up and then i can sit down with a cup of coffee on the computer

One thing you may want to consider... instead of posting questions on yahoo answers...you may want to take that time actually starting one of the jobs.

Your time on the computer is like a form of masturbation.

If you're really looking to change things limit your use on the computer to only certain hours or allow yourself on the computer only after you finish some of your work.

It a matter of self control. If you can control yourself I sure you have enough time in the day to clean-up and be on line.

It is also an addiction.
try to get over it soon by going out for more interesting job or learning, outdoor play, pictures. You have to train your mind and divert it. Or you can take out the connection of the computer and take a resolution to put it only at a particular time everytime.

it sounds like you are just enjoying your life!...and continue to do so!...we are in control of our own lives!...do what u want!...not what has to be done first all the time!...I am sure you have your priorities in line!.....relax!....keep on enjoying your life my friend.

you have ADD or depression..b/c you can't get things done that don't really interest you..and depression b/c you have no motivation..i was like that but i knew i wasn't lazy i just couldn't do it..so i was diagnosed with ADD and depression...i take Prozac and Ritalin...now everything is so much easier to d it doesn't take so much effort like it did before..i use to be very cluttered my room was a mess..now I'm organized and don't procrastinate.

EDIT:Jo W-I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD DEPRESSION OR ADD..BUT I WAS DIAGNOSED BY A PROFFESSIONAL..SOME PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW THAT THEY'RE SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION..YOU CAN'T DIAGNOSE YOUR SELF..ANYWAY BUT YOU'RE RIGHT IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT A PERSON HAS IT IF SOME OF THE SYMPTOMS ARE THERE..I ANSWERED THE QUESTION BASED ON MY EXPERIANCE. DON'T BE SO SURE OF YOUR SELF.

I feel you there for sure. I am the exact same way. I'm really addicted to the internet, which makes it hard for me to get anything done.

Only suggestion I can give you, is to turn it off. Make a goal each day to get one of the things done which you are meaning to do, and then don't get back online until you finish that one task.

Then the next day (or 2 days later or whatever), do the same thing.

Or you can say, "tomorrow I will take two hours out of the day to start working on the garage".
Turn off the comp, and dedicate yourself to working on the garage for those 2 hours. Don't just mosey around doing it either .. really tear it up while you're cleaning the garage! That way, the next day it'll look like you really got a lot done, and it won't seem AS overwhelming as it did to start with. Do that for like 3-4 days and you should have it all sorted.

Take a couple days off from the cleaning ritual.

Then to the closets. Do one a day, or one within a 3 day period spread out. Take a day off, then start on another one. .. Remember to commit to not getting online or whatever at all for 2 hours while doing this, and just think about the weight that will be lifted once you start seeing some results.

Now that you haven't gotten anything done for so long, I'm sure it's all starting to seem REALLY overwhelming, which makes you put it off even longer. I've been there before more than once.

The internet is just like a black hole, isn't it??

Good luck to you!!
