Foremost, this is because most smokers become addicted to the nicotine contained in tobacco products. Nicotine has a deadly addictive power. When a person smokes a cigarette, nicotine particles find their way to the lungs through inhalation. From there, nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream just like the oxygen people breathe. It travels with the blood to the brain where it locks onto certain receptor areas. Dopamine is then released into the brain. This is the chemical that makes the smoker feel a euphoric sensation. Smokers find it difficult to quit smoking because they come to be dependent on this good feeling. And, this leads to dependence - addiction.

A person who attempts to quit smoking may experience withdrawal symptoms. Topping the bill of withdrawal symptoms is depression. With the absence of the chemical that produces the relaxing feeling, the brain becomes distressed without it. Other withdrawal symptoms from smoking include: Headaches dizziness, and nausea Shakes, chills Cough, dry throat nasal drip Hunger, fatigue Constipation, gas or stomach pain Insomnia

Not knowing what to do with their hands is another common complaint among people trying to quit smoking. Once people get hooked, smoking becomes a big part of their lives. They seem to actually enjoy holding onto a cigarette. And, after a long period of lighting up, it becomes a routine. As a fact, humans are creatures of habit. By some force of habit, smokers find themselves reaching for a cigarette and lighting it up automatically without thinking about it.

hope that clears its up for u...

Because it feels good!!! Why do you think people pick up smoking and CONTINUE smoking for 60 years?

Just because you don't condone smoking, doesn't mean you have any say on what your mom does or doesn't do.

You have to understand. Smoking is an addiction It is like heroin or crack cocaine and is as hard if not harder to quit than either one of these. I am sorry for your mom, and I am sorry for you, but she is an addict and you can't help her unless she wants to help herself.

Because some people really like it.It's her choice. My doctor told me a lot of people keep smoking because cigarettes do ONE good thing only.It calms the nerve endings in the body. Some pople need that.Let her make her own choice.Trying to cram your ideas down her throat will not work. She has to decide when to quit, you can't do it for her.

she's stubborn and probably addicted man. she needs to pick up on a new hobby , or go through a rough experience.

As a long-time smoker who quit quite easily once I decided to quit, I dispute the popular belief of almost everyone, including "health professionals" that it is an addiction. Maybe your mother does not really believe all the negative things she hears about smoking. Nor does it automatically mean that she is not going to live a long life; there are lots of old smokers (just go to any home for old people). Maybe she just likes smoking and thinks it is her own business.
