Have you known or know people that have been sectioned / commited?!

Question: So, the other day someone i knew from a while ago was taken in to an Institute for their own good. Hallucinating in the waking world. Never a good sign.
What has struck me by all of this is the amount of people i have know go into these places. Either there is a conspiracy and i am next at some point or i just know some unlucky guys and gals.
I will not go into details or names or anything else but here is a little list of why they have gone to institutes for their own safety at some point or another. This going from way back to now, and who said the Cotswold's and Oxford is boring. Sorry cruel joke

1. Multiple suicide attempts
2. schizophrenia
3. Abuse of drugs causing devestating effects. (Lsd on large scale)
4. Same as above.
5. Extreme Violent behaviour (not sure really what you can call it)
6. Drug abuse and suicide attempts.
7. Paranoid. Hallucinating. Severe Agoraphobia.

I know quite a few people who have been hospitalized for mental conditions and I know a few people who should be but end up in jail instead of receiving the help they need.

Now I do think a lot of these people are very intelligent and have legally been labeled as insane due to our world's standards of what's normal and what's not. Who is to say what really is a mental illness and what is not?

The entire issue is confusing so I'll s.t.f.u. now.

Yep I know a couple more common then people realise

Being a danger to yourself or others is enough to get you committed. Paranoia and hallucinations may not be enough, but family members have a say here.

Yes, I was sectioned for six months about ten years ago for being a "danger to myself" and following repeated attempts at suicide. I was re-sectioned a few months down the line when my psychiatrist discovered that I was not taking my medication.

I don't think it's particularly unusual that you have known so many people with severe mental health problems... it just depends on the crowd you run with. For instance, my brother's friends make regular use of recreational drugs and many of them have been sectioned with cannabis psychosis or when LSD trips went awry. I used to go around with a group of angst-ridden grungy/gothy people, many of whom ended up requiring medical intervention for depression, self-injury and eating disorders.

It sounds as though I am creating stereotypes here, but that was not my intention! I suppose what I am trying to say is that it's a "birds of a feather flock together" sort of scenario.

no not really but i know people who should!

I was sectioned about 3 years ago for being a danger to myself and others, abuse of prescription drugs and paranoia.

I was then diagnosed as being bipolar. The mind is a funny old tool and anyone and i do mean ANYONE could be struck by mental illness at any time. These laws and institutions are there for our wellbeing and the well being of others even though at the time i was adimant that i didnt need help. Now of course im glad im well. xxxx

Hi

Some valid points made already by people who've answered before me.

As I now work in mental health, after years of being a 'service user' myself (and still being), I see this on a more regular basis than most people would. To be honest though it isn't as common practice these days, as wherever possible people are encouraged to go into hospital for treatment on a voluntary basis - which is much less distressing for everyone involved.

Unfortunately mental illness is much more common than the majority of people realise, when you consider that 1 in 4 people WILL suffer from some kind of mental ill health at some point in their lives, it is amazing how little is still known and understood about this type of illness, and how frightened people are of it!!

Sectioning can be done for a variety of reasons, and there are different types of 'section', it can be for assessment, or for treatment and it always has to be done following strict procedures.

If you want to know more about this in detail this link to the Mind website has lots of easy to read and understand information

I doubt that there is a conspiracy and that you are next on the list, it is more likely that for whatever reason, you just seem to have come into contact with lots of people who have needed support and treatment for some mental health problem, or in the case of others, people who have made poor choices when it came to alcohol and drugs.

My only suggestion to ensure that you aren't 'next' is to make sure that you maintain your own mental wellbeing in the best way you can, which may mean ensuring you take any medication, staying off drugs and using alcohol in moderation, or accepting the offer of treatment if it is there.

Hope this answers your question.

I've been sectioned in the past for attempting suicide and then refusing to go into hospital for the help the psychiatrists felt I needed.

I have.

Extremely suicidality and danger to self and others.

I haven't but I have been threatened from A&E twice, i.e. I wasn't allowed to leave A&E, and the police would drag m,e back if I did leave. On one occassion the nurse was sure I would end up n the pysch ward, but they sent me home, and on the other occassion they posted security on me to make sure I didn't scarper.

My best friends, good friend was hospitalised for a few years. Thats the closest I know of people being taken into a mental institution.

I had myself sectioned, I managed to reason that I had a choice between jumping in the river or seeking help, and luckily I chose help, I knew that something was clearly wrong with my thought prossesses. I have been stable under medication for 8 years now (diagnosed Schizophrenic) and lead a happy life. My Advise to anyone who has any doubts is to seek help early, before it is tooo late. I think a lot of the problems today is the Ultra competitve nature of society which leads many to fail under the pressure to cope.
