Would it be a good idea to set up a support group for people with eating disorde!

Question: there seems to be a distinct lack of support for people with eating disorders in the bristol area, especially for young women who have just started university. I know several people who have become affected by anorexia or bulimia, and there isn't a lot that the university can do for them. i have recieved conflicting advice on the idea of a support group, as some say it would work whilst others believe it would become a showcase for people to outdo each others. what are your opinions on the matter?

A support group sounds like a good idea. You have to have someone who is strong enough and well enough to take care of the running of the group and making sure no one is getting harmed through using the group, it will be a big responsibility so make sure you are well enough yourself. I think a good idea would be that people can only join the group if they want to get better I hate to see all this pro ana stuff it really scares me. good luck with your group if you decide to go ahead with it you will be doing a lot of people a huge favour as it can be very lonely when you are suffering with anorexia so being with others and hearing their stories could be helpful

My personal opinion, support groups are quite helpful.

Good luck to you!

Support groups are always helpful, provided that there is someone facilitating that is experienced with this type of disorder.. Eating disorders are never about eating, they are psychological illnesses. You have to be careful of not giving people misinformed information that could cause more problems. I say go for it, but have a professional involved.

support groups can help people feel less isolated but they may teach a person how to become a better anorexic etc as people share their experiences it may help some but hinder others

There should already be a support group in your area, called OA. Please check the link below.

I think it's a great idea - go for it!
