What do I tell my gp?!

Question: I'm sure I have a mental illness, and I want to do something about it now. I'm worried about how I should say it to my gp. I don't want to just walk in and say 'I'm crazy, what can you do?!'
I know I need the help straight away, but I'm just so anxious about actually saying it aloud to someone.

GP as in general practitioner? Your doctor is someone you can confide in. Confidentiality is protected by law. Tell him or her the symptoms you're having problems with and ask his or her opinion. You might be able to get a referral to a psychologist or psychiatrist. If you have an idea of what mental illness it is you can start looking into ways you can cope with it. I always recommend creative outlets: journaling, art, music, photography. Keep your mind busy, but make time to tackle the smaller issues and the underlying issue. Hopefully the links below will give you something to work with.

"I believe I need a psychiatry consult, and as soon as it can be arranged."

Tell your doctor. write down your symtoms . This will alleviate your anxiety about having to remember what you need to say.

"Doctor, I am aware I'm displaying symptoms of X, Y, Z. I know these issues can occur with hormone imbalance, brain chemistry and mental illness. Would you evaluate my hormones to see if there is a factor there? If not that then help me find someone if not yourself to look at my brain chemistry and ruling those out I need to seek a mental health care professional."

I would tell my GP that I'm feeling depressed and that I think that I need to talk to a psychiatric professional or else call your insurance company and find out who they recommend and go directly to them.

sweetie, if you do have a mental illness, there is nothing to be ashamed of...it is a medical situation. you would not be embarresed to have diabetes, or a heart problem, would you? your brain maybe ill....you are not crazy, you just have an illness that needs to be treated .

Just say it! tel your GP and just say it. Say it now!

tell him how you feel...describe the symptoms..anxious...etc..believe me as you talk they will be able to see what your going through...drs see lots of people every day with this stuff....there maybe a quick fix and maybe not...but youre on your way to fixing this...now go for it...been there.....
