My standard post follows, but, if you are young, antidepressants are unsuitable for young people. See depression treatments, at ezy build, below, in section 2, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at www.drugs.com so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his associate, and also Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, at www.mercola.com and many others: avoid antidepressants (pages 2V, and 2Z refer, & antidepressant websites: page 2). The reasons why we all share the same view on this are explained in full, as you will find, if you read the whole section. All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments" of the multidimensional approach to treating depression, including occupational therapy, relaxation techniques, and exercise, with others as options, such as the supplements: Inositol, or SAMe, or herbal remedies, like St. John's wort. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even weeks to begin becoming effective. It's a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I'd just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the prescription, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, or suicidal, in which case I'd take them). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and, instead of taking 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Optimal levels are 50 - 55 ng/ml (115 - 125 nmol/l. It should be above 32 ng/ml. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve. ~~~ View suicidal thoughts, in section 5, and the hotlines, in teens, in section 13. Visit your school counselor (do an online quiz, from section 1, at ezy build: print the result, and take it along), and ask if your mother can be contacted, on your behalf. Start the Omega 3, ASAP, and exercise: just a little, right now, even if you have no energy, or motivation: you will feel better for having made a start, and tomorrow, do a bit more, and so on. ~~~ These calls are all FREE! Be sure to dial the "1" first.

hello. First of all how old are you? Second I am 14 yrs and i am going through the same thing. Going to your school counseler will only make things worst. Make a list of things you really like to get better in your life. Then one by one think of all the GOOD things that would come out of doing it.
Hope that helps!
maybe u should talk to someone else thats close to u, such as ur dad, teacher, doctor, whoever, go have a talk and let ur anger and depression go away.
I truly mean no offence by what I'm about to say.
You are 13/14. You have no f'n idea what depression truly is or how it can affect your life.
You're not happy about something, googled depression and decided you have it.
Life sucks sometimes, but if you stick it out it gets better. But don't say you think you have depression because you have no idea
I saw a poster in school for this:
http://www.covenanthouse.org/nineline/
1-800-999-9999.
According to them, it's free. And please, do get the help that you need.
*Please* get help!
1. Call a crisis counselor.
2. Get counseling. Have a relative or someone else you trust drive. If you can't afford counseling you might be able to get cheap or almost free counseling through your local hospital or health clinic.
3. Set up a time you and your mother can discuss your problems.
4. Keep your mind busy, and don't spend so much time alone.
5. Allow a little time each day, maybe ten minutes, to think about what's bothering you. Write about it or talk aloud to yourself to sort your thoughts and feelings.
6. Start working on the surface issues.
7. As the smaller issues get resolved you'll be stronger and more able to deal with the root problem.
8. Be proactive in dealing with your depression. If you have any creative outlets--singing, art, music, journaling, photography--plug into them to vent your emotions. They're good for those quiet times you spend alone.
9. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people.
10. Exercise, walk, hang out with friends who can get your mind off your feelings.
11. Do things you used to enjoy.
12. Try new activities.
i would say you do have depression, but its never to late to pull yourself out. i am now 16 and a sophmore in highschool, when i was in 8th grade i had fully developed depression due to what i thought was developed from and eating dissorder that i didnt know i had [i thought losing 30lbs in a month in a half was normal] , i was put on medication, [multiple ones] i had started cutting, and other forms of self abuse [ burning myself, throwing up till i bled, giving myself bruises, and cutting the circulation of my hands till i was blue]. Alot of this went on through out my 8th grade year, towards the end of the year i was moved back to my old town and with my old friends, i was still on medication and i was doing pretty well, through summer i was fine, although i was still ALWAYS sleeping, eating shitty, and ignoring everything. [so pretty much just no abuse] i lost tons of friends, and my family was always worried, then in the beggining of 07 i had a major episode, i was pulled off my medication, torn away from my counsler and had no friends, i hated school too. i was abusing my self left and right [cutting mostly, arms, legs thighs hips, anywhere] [ i was also drinking wheneveer i got the chance, and smoking, pretty much to ecsape myself] i was going through this hard time with no one to help me but myself, then i finally got through to my parents that i really needed help once again, i moved away from my home, and up to a second home we had with my dad, i attended my old school, got back on medication, went back to counsling, i was finally starting to feel a little weight lift off my shoulders, but still i was worried if i didnt have my medication friends and counsling that i would fall right back to where i started, i knew i didnt want that so i did what ever i thought was healthy for myself, [body and mind] i was learning to deal with things i never thought i would be able to, finally i was excited to start my sophmore year, and then i relapsed again i went back to where i was 3 months ago, i finally thought it was helpless and i was never going to be normal ever again, and i tried to take my life, i ended up in the hostpital, i was fine but it made me realize how rediculous it was, i then started to pay attention to others that i knew thatt needed the help i never had from someone my age, no one knew what i was going through at the time. I was happy to help others out in a way i needed, but then again i went through it again, not as bad but i was still cutting, always upset this time because my parents were getting a divorce, i wasnt upset cuase they were getting one, i was happy. but then they tore the papers up and i cried myself to sleep for a couple weeks untill during that time i was attending church, i was learning who i was and how my personality was important to everyone else, i am now 100% recovered, i know WHO i am, WHO i WANT to be, and what i DONT want to be, i know its hard but there are ways out there, my number one help is having FAITH, i now live my life for god and what he has planned, not what i want.
some of this may be helpfull, or it may not.
i promise you, life is worth living, you may not see it now, but i have faith you will.
talk to someone that you don't know.
this way you can get things off your chest that you wouldnt to someone you know as you feel you might be jugded.
see it as a phase
Asking what to do is already taking a step in the right direction. And even on an anonymous forum like this, takes some bravery.
Some people have already listed phone numbers for help. The people answering those numbers will probably give you some good direction.
Of course a counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist will be of the greatest long-term help.
Some people find it easier to approach their regular physician or any medical doctor as a place to start (that's what I did).
Brett D: You are wrong. If you want to get clinical about it - teenagers are at a higher risk of suicide than adults. Whatever the reason for this is - it's irrelevant, in light of that fact. Depression has many causes - just because your experience might have come later in life doesn't mean that everyone else is just whining.
One final thing: Don't ever lose hope that things will get better. Depression is highly treatable if you get the right help.
