Yes, see teen depression, in section 2; also read section 13, on teens, at ezy build, below: there are multiple contact no.s, hotlines, and forums. My standard post follows, but, if you are young, antidepressants are unsuitable for young people. See depression treatments, at ezy build, below, in section 2, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at www.drugs.com so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his associate, and also Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, at www.mercola.com and many others: avoid antidepressants (pages 2V, and 2Z refer, & antidepressant websites: page 2). The reasons why we all share the same view on this are explained in full, as you will find, if you read the whole section. All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments" of the multidimensional approach to treating depression, including occupational therapy, relaxation techniques, and exercise, with others as options, such as the supplements: Inositol, or SAMe, or herbal remedies, like St. John's wort. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even weeks to begin becoming effective. It's a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I'd just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the prescription, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, or suicidal, in which case I'd take them). If the amount of daylight you have been exposed to recently has reduced, perhaps due to the change of seasons, see Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.) in section 2, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and, instead of taking 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily; replace 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements for the winter months only! (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels, using the 25 Hydroxyvitamin D test. Optimal levels are 50 - 55 ng/ml (115 - 125 nmol/l. It should be above 32 ng/ml. Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve. ~~~ Visit your school counselor.

Yes, I had depression when I was 13.

Depression can set in anytime or any age.

Yes it can be present in any age but most likely you are just growing up atm. Give us some examples

yeah. i was very depressed at 13-16.

Sure....get to your family doctor who will probably refer you to a child's psychiatrist...best of luck

Yes that is very possible. Just be careful if you get a prescription for an anti-depressant, because they have been known to induce suicidal thoughts in people under the age of 18.

there is no such thing as being too young to be depressed.
it depends on the situations on your life and how u deal with it.
i really do hope things work out for u. i know ppl say that all the time but i seriously feel 4 u.

you can be depressed at any age. you should see a psychologist. its good to talk to someone.

It can happen at any age. Please seek counseling. If you can't afford it you should be able to get cheap or almost free counseling through your local hospital or health clinic. Find someone you can trust to talk to. Take a proactive approach to healing. Do things you used to enjoy, surround yourself with positive people, and plug into creative outlets (journaling, art, music, dance, photography, etc.). I had depression all my life. When I finally figured out what I want to do with my life I started having a much better outlook. If you can figure out what matters to you and what you want out of life and tackle the small issues before you deal with the root cause it should help a lot.

yes but being depressed and depression are two completely different things.

You can't make a diagnosis like that. Talk to your doctor if you truly feel its a problem and not just a bad few days

yes any age anytime

yup

You can be depressed at any age, my friend.

I hope you can confide in an adult who can steer you to the help you will need.

yes.. but you shouldn't think about it too much and relax a little (or alot if u want)

Yup...hope you start seeing the bright things in life...xoxox

I have anxiety disorder so i know what's it's like to be depressed. You can have depression at any age, even old age since the elderly feel they are useless when they're not. Nobody is useless. Everyone has a purpose in life and a reason to be on this Earth. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "Life was meant to be lived, and curiosity must be kept alive. One must never, for whatever reason, turn his back on life." Don't take any meds or talk to psychologists. I tried talking to one and it didn't help me out all. Psychologists do anything they can to make their money out of their patients, so i don't recommend it. But that's just how I felt about it. Anti-depressants further increase self-destructive thoughts and negativity, so you don't want that either. The best thing I found out was to be my own boss and talk to myself, and it worked for me. I haven't had depression in the longest of times because I talked to myself. Other things you can do to get yourself better are to think positive thoughts, tell yourself over and over that you'll be allright and take deep breaths to calm yourself. Listen to trance or techno music. Take bubble baths to calm your nerves. These all help. Best of all, here is a 24 hour hotline crisis #: 240 777 4000. They can help you deal further with your depression and offer sympathy as well.

Yes you can be 13 and depressed.

Track the days on a calendar. Are they related to your period? That is PMS.

If the depression persists longer than a period, it would be good for you to mention this to someone, a parent, doctor, counsellor and see if you can get some guidance.

All these answers are excellent, but Bret D said something very insightful: being depressed and depression are two different things. You can even have many bad things happen to you and never get depressed.

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medication supplies what is missing or out of balance. The best things to do are: 1. eat right to keep up your energy; 2. get enough rest - you need a lot at your age and will need more as an older teen; 3. find someone to talk to about the things that are depressing you. Make sure that person doesn't go around sharing private information; 4. stay away from people who are always complaining - they will suck you in to their unhappiness; 5. get to the doctor and see if medication is necessary. If he/she brushes you off, insist the doctor listen; 6. do not drink or take drugs, they will do you no good.

If you are in a bigger city, you should have a school counselor, school nurse, and school psychologist. All are trained to listen and try to help you. If you don't have that, try a teacher you admire, some adult in your family, or take yourself to the doctor.

As someone said, some antidepressants are dangerous for teens and cause a higher chance for suicide. That doesn't mean you should reject any medication. That means you should be monitored and monitor your own mood. Also, if you are prescribed medication, take it exactly as told and keep taking it. If you want off, your doctor will tell you how to do it. Some medications can be stopped immediately. Some have to taper off slowly.

I hope reading all these different answers will encourage you to try and get help. They should give you hope and show you that you are not alone. It is becoming more common to talk about these problems. You can tell all of us wish the best for you.

Yes, but the more important question is are you depressed or suffering from depession. Depressed is just a feeling of great sadness. If it is constant no matter what is happening, then you should probably start going to counseling, try your school counselor. They can be great help sometimes.

yup.

oh, boy. Story of my life...

Thinking back, my depression started in elementary school from moving all over the country, parents' divorce, being teased, you name it.

It got to the point where I can't remember more than 2 times in my childhood when I was happy.

In 7th grade (12 years old), I almost commited suicide. I had a bottle of pills in one hand and a glass of water in the other. The only thing that stopped me was knowing that I was moving in with my dad soon.

Fast forward to summer between freshman and sophomore year in high school. I withdrew myself from everything and everyone I loved. I started scratching to ease the mental pain. Physical pain is soooooo much easier to deal with than mental pain. The scratching with a safety pin turned into scratching with scissors which evolved into cutting...I had to cut deeper and deeper every time to feel some relief.

Depression is a CHEMICAL IMBALANCE in your brain. You CANNOT stop it unless you talk to someone. Yes, you can be dependant on medication to feel happy again, but would you rather be chemically dependant on an antidepressant or depressed for the rest of your life? You can be weened off of the medication in time!

If you are feeling depressed, please PLEASE talk to someone you can trust and feel comfertable talking to. I didn't think I would make it to graduation, but because I had one certain teacher I could spill my guts to, I am going to a college that is one step below MIT and Harvard.

BTW, Please don't start self-harming. It turns into compulsions and addictions and makes things so much harder down the long road. Please, please, please do not do what I did. Make your life better than mine was.

I hope you figure out what to do. I am here if you need to talk.

you might have read some psychic sciences and going behind the odd's of number 13.. do not believe in any omens.. any thing can happen anytime in life. and by the way who said 13 is unlucky?? Its unlucky to those who says that.. many good things happened on this planet on 13th. read history and try to find out the name of celebrities who were born on 13th..if they can be celebs why cant u..dear...???
