A.D.D question!!!? Someone who knows a lot about it.?!

Question: I was diagnosed add when I was 14, now I am 19. I have a doc apt next week to get some medicin. I feel like I can hardly manage, I even self medicade with sudafed things to make me more alert just to feel normal. It's so hard to pay attention to my son. It feels like my mind is never focused on one thing. The only thing I sadly can say I can focus on is T.V. Look I need to know what people know about add. I didn't ever do anything about it when I was told I had it. And so many people claim to have it these days, I am not sure if I am even one of them. Who does have it, who can explain the symptoms so I can know. And what do doctors perscribe for this now. And what are good medicin to take. And do doctors sometimes mistake add for depression or anxiety instead?

You just described the symptoms of ADD (now know as ADHD).
and Yes doctors commonly misdiagnose ADHD as anxiety although anxiety is also common for people with ADHD.
what you are experiencing when you watch TV is called Hyper focus and is common for people with ADHD.
do you find that any activity you enjoy or have a great interest in can consume almost all of you attention?
do you find yourself stoping one activity to start another because you just thought of the second and now are more focused on it than the 1st?

Anxiety and Depression are commonly linked to ADD (ADHD)

As far as which Medications work best, It's different for everybody.
I have not found one that works well for me and I have tried most of them.

even with Meds, you might want to learn some tactics for dealing with your ADD and ways to "get around" it.

You mentioned Sudafed, do you find Caffine and other stimulants actually help you slow down?

It should answer some of your questions:
One of the difficulties in diagnosing ADHD is that it's often found in conjunction with other problems. These are called coexisting conditions, and about two thirds of all children with ADHD have one. The most common coexisting conditions are:

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD)
At least 35% of all children with ADHD also have oppositional defiant disorder, which is characterized by stubbornness, outbursts of temper, and acts of defiance and rule breaking. Conduct disorder is similar but features more severe hostility and aggression. Children who have conduct disorder are more likely get in trouble with authority figures and, later, possibly with the law. Oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder are seen most commonly with the hyperactive and combined subtypes of ADHD.

Mood Disorders (such as depression)
About 18% of children with ADHD, particularly the inattentive subtype, also experience depression. They may feel inadequate, isolated, frustrated by school failures and social problems, and have low self-esteem.

Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders affect about 25% of children with ADHD. Symptoms include excessive worry, fear, or panic, which can also lead to physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, stomach pains, and diarrhea. Other forms of anxiety that can accompany ADHD are obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome, as well as motor or vocal tics (movements or sounds that are repeated over and over). A child who has symptoms of these other conditions should be evaluated by a specialist.

Learning Disabilities
About half of all children with ADHD also have a specific learning disability. The most common learning problems are with reading (dyslexia) and handwriting. Although ADHD isn't categorized as a learning disability, its interference with concentration and attention can make it even more difficult for a child to perform well in school.
