DBT has shown great benefit for people with this disorder. Coupled with drug treatment, regular therapeutic intervention can prove to be highly effective. The behavioral apsects work well to help these people stop the self-mutilatory behaviors.

CBT psyco therapy and Prozac (Fluoxetine) have worked for me.

The ones that helped me the most had the worst side effects. Prozac worked better than anything for me, but I could not have an orgasm on it, and I would dream the craziest dreams. The dreams were so real that I would wake up exhausted, almost like I never slept at all. Every night it was a dream about the same thing, there were three hippie looking guys in an old beat up truck chasing me, they would chase me through fields, I was running nonstop, jumping over fences and running through creeks. I would sometimes come to an old farm house, I would kick the front door down and run through the house. The house looked small from the outside, but once I was inside it went on forever. I would run to a closet, there would be a ladder in the closet that went to the next floor, I would then run to the far end of the house and there would be a small hole in the wall, go through that and in to another hall.... etc.etc. The whole time I could hear the three guys behind me. I would find a back door, run through it and once I was outside there thery were in the truck chasing me down again. I would wake up sweating and exhausted, dreaming the same dream every night for the 2 years I was on prozac.
I also tried Rispiridol, and Cymbalta. They both worked good, but I felt foggy all of the time. I was afraid to ride my motorcycle while I was taking them.
I take Wellbutrin XL now. It doesn't work as well, but there are no side effects.
Understanding your disorder and reading about it will also be helpful. I read as much as I could about my disorder, and with the help of meds I am able to recognize situations that I am uncomfortable with. The Welbutrin lets me slow down and take a breather and relate what is happening at that moment with things I have read about my disorder.
I'm sorry this answer is so long, but this is the brain chemestry that God gave me, it's just how I am.

DBT was orginially designed to help treat Borderline Personality D/O. Meds aren't going to do much good because it's not a chemical imbalance. At least that's what I've been told. DBT helps teach you new coping skills and is a cognitive based therapy. The way it works here is you attend group once a week for 2-1/2 hours where you review/work on skills and then attend a weekly session with an individual therapist that is more like the traditional talk therapy. Hope that helps.
