Psychiatrists and Psychologists, Please Answer?!

Question: I'm not joking around- I'm getting scared. Could you please tell me what the signs are for a "future serial killer"? I'm worried about my 7yr old nephew... Is being mean to pets a "sign"? I asked some questions in the pets then Grade-Schooler categories, and people are giving me answers that have me concerned.

Also, my father and elder brother are very "anti-social"....

There is no way to know to know what your nephew will be like when he is older, if he becomes older. He could be in an accident, or have a disease, and have no future. But with all that you have said, he has no "present". He is in an extremely dysfunctional home, and his behavior is his acting out his anger.
If at all possible, speak to his first grade teacher, or whomever is his school counselor, etc. Let them know the situation, and find out how he is at school. You may not get answers, because you are not the parent, but you can warn the principal of the home situation. They know nothing sometimes, until too late.

Be around him as much as possible and let him know that SOMEONE cares. Find outlets for his acting out, such as sports, etc. Be the friend that he needs. BUT, he still will need psychiatric evaluation, and you will need your sister to allow that to happen.

Your description of the male members as being anti-social will have some bearing on your nephew, because he has no positive male model. But this doesn't mean that being anti-social is wrong...my husband and also my best male friend are both anti-social, in that like doing things on there own. So, rather than using anti-social as a description, always stress what proof you have for your description of them.
When you talk to a counselor, principal, or whomever, have all of your facts written down, and use this as your argument that this child needs supervision and help.
And yes, hurting animals is a sign that the child is angry. For those who wrote and said it is no big deal, trust me, it is. Simply because of the background you describe him to be in, he is picking on a vulnerable animal right now; later it leads to hurting kids in school, and much later, can lead him into jail.
Get him help, however you can, and begin at his school. They are mandated to help such a child and can relieve you of going to authorities; they can ask for the Welfare Dept. to look into the situation and keep you out of it.
Good luck. Thanks for caring, and yes, this is a terrible situation, and without intervention, this child will not thrive.

Abuse of animals is not a guaranteed serial killer in the making. however it is a warning sign. It could be a product of environment or something more physiological/psychological in origin. You haven't elaborated on the details so I will play it safe; it's time to have a talk with you sibling and recommend an external evaluation. It could start with the school psychologist, a county clinic, or a referral from their health plan. I wish you the best of luck bringing up this sensitive matter. Keep looking out for the kids!

Antisocial, with its connotations of vandalism, etc., or asocial (prefers a lot of solitude)? I'd also be concerned: what sort of values, morality, and ethics is he being taught? NOW is a good time to seek treatment for him, with a p(a)ediatrician, or developmental psychologist. Also, find out if he is being bullied at school, or abused at home (father/boyfriend, siblings, mother?), because such behavio(u)r often results from them. Bullying: see section 37, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris & www.drdrew.com on abuse. ~~~ These calls are all FREE! Be sure to dial the "1" first.

9 out of 10 boys are abusive with animals in some way when they are growing up. Does your nephew even realize that he is hurting the animals? In his mind he may be just playing with them. I don't know, but maybe you should sit down and listen to him as a first step.

Well, I admit it doesn't sound good. But I think it's a little unfair to label a seven-year-old a 'future serial killer' and there's certainly no list of tick boxes where you can cross-reference his behaviour with that of Ted Bundy.
If you're really concerned about him you could try talking to him or take him to a child psychologist. There could be much deeper, underlying reasons for his behaviour such as bullying/abuse/ADD or even something more simple than that... maybe he just watches too much violent crap on the telly.
Anyway, you said he was 'mean' to the pets - do you mean he hurts them or is just unkind to them. Maybe he's just jealous of the dog?

okay well serial killer.... i think that may be a little far.... but he may be having some problems at home that he is having anger issues and trying to take it out on someone else.....maybe you need to see why he is so angry he may be futurely abusive tho but just make sure he is not around abuse, drugs, or excessive alcohol, and talk to him about something and ask him about this maybe make him see a couselor even

If he is seriously harming animals, in all probability he is seriously being abused or neglected. That is how antisocial ppl are made - child abuse or neglect. I'd worry a lot more about the present than the future.
