Why is it that all of the sudden......EVERYONE is bipolar and has anxiety?!

Question: Seriously, every other question in the mental health section is about people being bipolar, like it's the latest craze or something. I have nothing against mental illness, being that I'm schizoaffective myself!!! LOL But my doctor orginally had me misdiagnosed as being bipolar. Does anyone else find it odd that so many people are " suddenly" coming forth and admitting they have that?

it just was not very acceptable earlier i guess.....

i have an anxiety disorder that makes me shiver and shake, get nautious, nervous and get hot flashes and panic attacks....its horrible, but im trying to handle it without medication...its been almost a year now and im proud to say im doing fairly well.....God gave me this burden for a reason, but im not sure why yet. Everything is meant to happen.

anyways, i HATE it and wish things would go back to the way they were...

put it this way, think of two horrible things....

blood clots, and heart failure...and cancer....i, at times, get SO SURE i have them i almost pass out from getting really nervous.....i hate it so much....tonight i actually dont feel very good...but ill handle it, its nothing new. anyways, good luck to you and God bless.

I think a lot of people WANT to have something wrong with them...and mental illness has always been intriguingly interesting. It adds spice to their lives and gets them attention. That's my take.

if it makes you feel any better ive never thought i was bi polar or anything, im stable ive never taken medication or seen a psychiatrist

If you have a disease, you can escape from your problems and reality. Bipolar seems presently to be the #1 coverall for people who can't deal with life.

Today's times are very stressful and more than many people can handle. Years ago there may have been just as many ill people out there but in those days a mental illness was something families kept in the closet so to speak. If you will also notice, in years gone by , you rarely heard of child molestation but now it is crawling out of the wood work with victims coming forward now. The stigma attatched to these things no longer exists because so many have or are suffering from this , it is common now to come out in the open. And the stressful times we live in, the drug and alcohol abuse of parents giving birth to children effected by their bad habits are another cause of more illness.

I don't know what you have but what I do believe is that you have a great sense of humor...we need more of that now a days...lighthearted you are. I don't know why it seems like everyone suddenly has bipolar, it's common but it's also rare in many ways...I think that perhaps Ms. Britney has made another not so fashionable faux pas through no fault of her own, she truly is bipolar and I think that through that illness everyone else seems to feel that they have it or could have it. However, partying too much or drinking in excess is not necessarily a side effect of bipolar as much as everyone would like to think.

It's not a fashionable mental illness but a very serious one that needs to be treated accordingly.

Maybe they want to be like Brittalny Spears, or are feeling more able to talk about it after knowing she has it. I suspect something in environment or diet is causing the Huge increase in BiPolar diagnoses, but could be a fad. Investigate excitotoxins causing BP and ADHD. Or GMO or spraying toxins over cities like California is doing, probably other states too. We are allowing ourselves to be poisoned.

I've noticed that too, but you sure don't see anyone famous coming out to say they are schizophrenic. The big time stigma on schizophrenia still exists, but I'm waiting. There must be someone famous out there with it.

Yes, everyone is being labeled bipolar. And, I think some of it is just reaction to stress in their lives-including me. What I want to know is why are all these young girls cutting? You never heard of such years ago when I was a teen.

Being bipolar or depressive is actually accepted in our society nowadays. So people will admit it freely. I think that its been around since the beginning of time but now as we rise in consciousness, we now realize that it is not normal behavior.

I do see what you mean to some extent. It does SEEM to be more prevalent. I think there are several reasons for this. I think one of the reasons could be that the stigma of mental illness is going down somewhat, and more people are willing to admit that they have it. (Of course, the stigma of mental illness is still pretty bad.) But still though, bipolar disorder is actually pretty rare. According to the DSM-IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, 4th Edition, Text revision), "The lifetime prevalence of Bipolar I Disorder in community samples has varied from 0.4% to 1.6%" "Community studies suggest a lifetime prevalence of Bipolar II Disorder of approximately 0.5%." So, as you can see, neither disorder is very prevalent. I think that bipolar disorder just happens to be getting a lot of media attention at the moment, but it is not really the case that more people are suddenly coming down with it.

I suffer from depression and anxiety lol. I don't know what's going on with everyone, quite a few of my friends are all on Prozac because they're all depressed too. What the hell's going on???
x

Personally I think that what it is, is that these disease's were not spoken about years ago as they are now. So now people are learning of these things and are starting to realize that they think they have the disease's or they think they do. I have anxiety attacks here and there I belive they are what causes my Blood Pressure to run high. But I don't like for people to know this about me so I keep it to myself for the most part.
